Hello I own a 2005 2.0 d4d Avensis and just recently it hasn't been starting very well. Yesterday it wouldn't start at all.

when turning the key the starter turns and trys to start but either starts late or spins and doesn't start atall.

No fault code shows up, the Battery is fine and the car drives fine once it is started, any advice please? I've searched the forums and have read about problems with the Solenoid valve Control, could this be the problem and can you buy the part separatly if it is. I don't trust the car now, don't want the wife and kids stranded. Appreciate any help.

hello

check with SCV first;

secondly - fine fuel filter;

in third - fuel injectors.

by the way - are you the first owner or ... ?

in cacse you're not the first then it might be an issue with injectors -- besides what is milage?

cheers/Igor

I've owned it about 6 months the mileage is 72000. It started fine this morning when cold then done it again after being turned off for about 30 minutes.

thanks for quick replies.

Nothing, just a oil change and service last week by a non toyota garage but it was doing this for about 2 weeks before the service.

It had a oil change and service by a non toyota garage 3 days ago but has been doing this for about 2-3 weeks. Hasn't had anything else done since I bought it.

I'm not sure if this is relevant, i have a 2.2 d4d which always starts ok ........ but if i sit in the car listening to the radio ie the ignition key in the first position(no ignition on) for a while with the engine not running then try to start the engine by turning the key straight to the start position it won't start until i turn the key completely off then try again then it starts immediatly. Could any guru out there say if there is a link here to d360sams problem, could there be a relay fault on the fuel system.

hello mate

yes the first key position allows to listen to the radion/CD;

the second key position switches all lights ON and leads to feed all relays, solenoids before cranking;

the third position starts the starter motor + timing.

naturaly you are to start your engine well as per above steps.

if not -- i deem you'd better ask for consultation with officials.

Hello Mate,

I had a problem starting last week. Thought it was the Battery, but when I put it on charge, charger instantly showed the Battery was fully charged and the car started ok. Thinking it was a dogy connection took all the leads off and cleaned everything off. A few days later put the g/box into 2nd gear accidently before starting and the car jerked forward when I tried to start. Put it back into neutral and it would not start, sounding like a flat Battery. Got a jump start and it started straight away, took it home and the battery was still indicating fully charged. Got a new battery and no problems since.

Don't know if this of any help. My car is the same engine and same year :rolleyes:

I had a similar problem, especially starting when the engine was warn. The problem was the starter motor. The engine will not start unless it turns at a certain speed. It took a new starter motor to cure the problem

I took it to a specialist diesel service who have checked pump pressure and everything is ok, the next step is the injectors but as they are denso they would have to send them off to be tested and they're priced at around £1000 for a set anyway, which i can't afford right now, so I'm stuck. Has anybody else had injector problems?

Ragardless of the maker brand these injectors might be tested at any reliable garage dealing with repair and adjusting of injection parts.

do not spend 1k pounds but visit this garage.

I'm bringing the car home today, then I'm taking it to the Toyota main dealer, see what they can do. Also will search for a garage who can test the injectors. thanks

I've got the car home, the mechanic thinks its the injectors but he can't test them, I'm having difficult finding somewhere in the UK that can test Denso injectors, I'm going to get a price from the Toyota main dealer, may start a new topic if anybody else has had these tested.

Price for an injector from Toyota £323.25 + VAT!!!!!!!!!! If I can find somewhere to get them tested hopefully it might be something else.

Did the starter turn to try to start the car?

Just in case anybody else has this problem, the new starter fixed it. Works perfect again now like a toyota should.

wouldn't think injectors yet buddy . have you had the fuel filter changed . if not try draining it to see if any water is present . also check the air filter . good luck.
