Avensis D4d Lack Of Power And Smoke...

Hi i have a 53 plate avensis d4d, it has been fine until recently,

now it has an intermittent problem where it will be really gutless as if the turbo is not working, and loads of black smoke from exhaust.

if i stop and look at exhaust behind car theres loads of black smoke even on tickover when turbo isnt even supposed to be working.

if the turbo was gone the problem would surely be all the time, and a few people mention fuel starvation but black smoke means there is plenty of fuel i think?

the car has no management light on and therefore cannot be diagnosed by computer.

i can turn car off and sometimes the fault goes and it will drive normally again.

hopefully someone has an idea what it might be..

Is it serviced correctly, It may be the fuel filter or air filter need changed. You could try starting there first anyway!!

Fuel or oil consumption has been changing ?

Any possible relation with the brand of fuel ?

Is the exaust line and pan ok? (in case of obstrution that's exactly what would be happening)

Even without any of this replys, I would pay very attention to turbo "noise", when runing cold and runing hot.

Anyway the exaust sensors should be giving you alerts already, cause of such smoke...

Check first of all the state of the air filter (easy one to check)and hoses on the inlet side.

Maybe a problem with the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve or the MAF (mass air flow) sensor on the air intake.

Make sure there is nothing obstructing the air intake where it first collects the air .... like a plastic bag etc which may partially fall away when the engine stops sucking as you switch off only to be picked up again later as you drive, might sound silly but I have seen everything over my long career with vehicles and sometimes the simplest things can be the answer rather than changing expensive parts on the road to a solution.

If anyone wants to check the EGR valve:-

EGR SYSTEM (1CD–FTV)

ON–VEHICLE INSPECTION

HINT:

In a malfunction where the EGR system is always on, black smoke or white smoke may be emitted from the

exhaust pipe. If this occurs, inspect the EGR system as well.

1. INSPECT SEATING OF EGR VALVE

(a) Start the engine and check that it starts and runs at idle.

2. INSPECT HOT ENGINE CONDITION (WHEN USING HAND–HELD TESTER)

(a) Connect the hand–held tester to the DLC3.

(B) Start the engine and run it at idle.

© Select the ACTIVE TEST mode on the hand–held tester.

HINT:

Refer to the hand–held tester operator’s manual for further details.

(d) Warm up the engine, the coolant temperature should be above 75C (109F) and bellow 90C

(194F).

(e) Check that the AFM reading is 5ega8 g/s with the engine idling.

(f) Operate the EGR valve with a hand–held tester. Regulate the valve opening angle to 0, and check that

the AFM reading is 11ega17 g/s..

If the AFM reading is out of range in either (e) or (f), replace the EGR valve.

If the AFM is out of range in both (e) and (f), replace the air flow meter (air cleaner) and check the EGR valve

operation again.

3. INSPECT HOT ENGINE CONDITION (WHEN NOT USING HAND–HELD TESTER)

(a) Install the vacuum gauge.

(1) Using a 3–way connector, connect a vacuum gauge to the hose between the intake manifold and

the turbo pressure sensor.

(B) Warm up the engine, the coolant temperature should be above 75C (109F) and bellow 90C

(194F).

© Check that the vacuum gauge indicates about more than 2.5 kPa (19 mmHg 0.7 in Hg).

(d) Stop the engine (IG OFF), remove the EGR valve connector, restart the engine, and check that load

under idling is less than 2.5 kPa (19 mmHg 0.7 in Hg).

If the load pressure exceeds the above value, replace the EGR valve.
