Knocking From Front

Ok, hair pulling out time... if anyone can help me with this I'd appreciate it!

I have an auto '98 Avensis Estate that has developed a knocking from the front. Initially I thought it was coming from the drivers side but it definitely seems to be coming from somewhere more central.

It's uneven road surfaces that cause the knocking, and it sounds like a 'clunky' knock if that helps :)

It's just been through the MOT and the lower Universal Joint on the steering column was worn, so I had that replaced. It's now gone through the MOT but the knocking is still there! The guy that did the work is at a loss as to what it is.

I've searched through the forums but there's nothing that seems to match my particular problem.

Anyone have any ideas? All are appreciated!

hello mate

i am in doubts - this will help you - but i have replaced both front shock absorbers by 105k (kms) but Toyota's mechanic did not pay attention on the condition of all brake calipiers guide pins. now i face to th eproblem with these pins worn down resulting the same knocking when droven on the "good" roads. i gonna order these guide pins as full set for four calipiers to ferget this issue. this knocking noise is due to all gaps are out of limits (calipier hole and guide pin).

may be you have the same problem - check it.

cheers/Igor

I had the same problem on an older car I used to have. Turned out to be the CV boot which had had split. My guess is its something similar. When I replaced it the knocking went straight away

To unclegarthy,

Before spending any money make sure every single nut & bolt is tight from eng/bay suspension top mounts to engine subframe.

Keep it simple to start with, check your A/R/Bar links & bushes for wear. Very common fault which will give clunk sound on un even or badly maintained roads. Any slight movement whatsoever, renew them.

To check your CV joints, use local large carpark to test them, put car on full right hand lock & drive in circle, any knocking means n/s joint has gone & on other lock to test o/s joint.

Regards, Beagh.

Thanks all, a few things to try here.

Looks like I'll be spending the bank holiday under the car!

I'll report back on the findings :D
