Hi!

The other day when I went to work, suddenly the car releast a lot of exchaust, as if the topseal on the engine was leaking. It went on for about 3-4 minutes, and stopped as quickly as it started. I have read that some catalysators stores some emisions, and is programmed to throw it out, resulting in some smoke comming from the exchaust.

Anyone experienced the same? Any ideas?

What colour was the smoke?

Did it look white / what temperature was it in norway at the time?

If it was the exhaust gas rengerentation cycle kicking in it shouldn't last for more than 10 seconds and it very noticeably in the cold, when the very hot exhaust gas hits the cold air creating steam too.

If it was black smoke, does the car still run OK? Engine timing OK? If it was black i would defiantly phone the garage for advise before driving it there. If it was running badly after this happened i wouldn't drive it, get it towed to the garage.

Thanks for the answer!

Well, the smoke were more white than "oilblack". I stopped the car on a gas station, and checked the oil. Level was ok. Drove to work, about 1km further without any indication or alerts in the controlpanel, and the smoke passed. The engine still preformed well, and no indications or bad sounds from the engine while driving.

Later I called the garage, but they adviced a service without being told what this might be.

I have read some on the net about the catalyzator kicking the exchaust, and I think this is what happened. The temperature in Oslo was about +10 degrees today.

Later this evening I have driven the car and it preformes very well, without any smoke, so.....

I will bring it to service next week, and hopefully get some answer, which I doubt. This because there's only generated a log on second fault/alarm in the engine. At least that what Toyota told me.

Any remarks, plese give me some feedback. I'll come back later, and also with the information gathered after the service!
