Without knowing you personally and having an idea on your aspirations and ambitions for the future it's virtually impossible to give an opinion.

If it was me though, I'd do Forensic Accountancy - plenty of vacancies in this field as there aren't enough qualified people to trawl through the parliamentary receipts at the moment !

Study to be an air traffic controller.. I know a chap thats about 24 that is one and earns £50k a year.. - plus not many poeple go for it so its not a mega saturated market.

Failing that accountancy and specialise in administration, by the time you are fully qualified and good at it we'll be due another recession.. They are one of the few people that thrive in these times!

I could have been a mechanic easily, but there is not a great deal of money in it, which put me off!

-Also the way things are going there aren't really many "mechanics" these days, just "fitters" as the motor industry evolves I'd expect to see even more modular bits that are replaced, not fixed.. if cars do go more towards electric and fuel cell there will be less to go wrong mechanicly, and fuel cells I imagine will either just be swapped out, or fixed by people in lab coats.

Good point.

I would love to work on performance cars, and thats not me saying i want to drive fast cars all day.

Many people are telling me that being a mechanic is a dead end job and that im going to be working in a grotty garage for the rest of my life, i truely believe that i can work my way up to leading garages such as Mercedes or BMW.

I want to be a mechanic, i think being happy with the job is more important than the money.

Thats very noble, however when you want to buy a house and have a nice car money comes in useful ;)

From personal experiance, judging by some of the monkeys they employ at Mercedes and BMW garages you can afford to aim a little higher ;)

If I was going that route i'd love to be a proper craftsman... think the Hot rod builders on american hot-rod

So what happened?

I realised I didn't want to live at my parents for the rest of my life.

But I went the other way too, sacrificing my health/sanity for cash.

It's all about a happy medium. I'm in a field that can provide me with money/opportunities, but also in a job that I enjoy.

I understand that, i personally just think that being happy is just slightly more important than money, im not saying money is not useful though ;)

Your right, it changes from person to person though, right?

Agreed. But I'd not be happy living under my parents roof, having a crappy car on their drive, and seeing no way out or improvement.

And there are loads of mechanics out there, who dream of being an F1 engineer, that don't make it.

Would you **really** be happy to be 35 years old, on £12k a year. Telling the girl you are taking home after a night out to "be quiet, you'll wake my Mum".

You could be right, thanks.

Don't mind me ;)

I'd suggest looking at the employment market, and seeing something that you:

a. can do

b. is not saturated

c. has prospects

d. enjoyable

And probably in that order ..

But then again, looking at some people out there, being able to do the damn job isn't a pre-requisit.

Enjoyment is a big part, but if you are competing with a lot of other people, for a crap job, that you can't do. I doubt you'll be enjoying it.

And good luck! You are defo doing it right by getting the quali's first and then looking for the job.

Keep in study while this depression is happening and then get out there when it picks up.

Ah, the old money Vs happiness debate. I'm fortunate that I have a job I enjoy (teaching people to repair aero engine nacelles) that also pays OK. Obviously another few K wouldn't go amiss, but hey ho - that's life.

Money can, to a certain extent, makeup for a job you don't enjoy just as enjoyment, to a certain extent, can make up for poor money. Oooh, that's deep for me...
