HI, i was looking at buying a 57 plate Avensis 1.8 TR, after a quick test drive i

noticed that there was a grinding noise when applying the brakes, i told the sales

man this and he said the car had stood for a week and they just needed to be used

to clear them off, maybe i tought to myself but they still grinded the same when we

came back to the dealership ! I had a look at the disc's when we got back, they

looked very scored and marked, some were quite deep score marks ! again the sales

guy said it was normal, ok i said and whent over to a couple of other 07 plate Avensis

and looked at the disc's, both cars had brand new disc & pads ! the guy told me that

all the cars had covered around the same miles, ( the one i drove had 16,300 ) Is this

normal for the disc's to be changed at such low miles ? Is this a known Avensis problem ?

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Kcs

My 07 plate 1.8 has now covered 22K miles, ex-Toyota car with 15K on when I bought it, still on original pads with some way to go yet. They always make a 'grinding' noise for a while though, on first driving after being left for a week or so (as mine frequently is).

Badly scored discs would be a concern though, I would think.

hello

normally when the car is iddle for a long time all discs become rusted especially when the climate is foggy.

it is admissible that several brakings can arise specific noise. besides each pad has steel wear indicator. have all pads inspected on wear down rate. may be this is what we are talking about ???

cheers/Igor

I'm assuming you are looking at cars from a Toyota dealer - round here similar cars are given a full check over by the dealer before releasing.

If you spot small faults like paint scuffs etc - pointing them out to the salesman should being the reply - ' we will sort that out in the paint shop for you '

While it is true about the discs rusting while standing, if there is obvious deep grooving, request that they be skimmed or replaced - the workshops just turn them down a fraction and fit new pads.

If they won't address your concerns - walk away - plenty more around - its a buyers market !
