2003 Diesel Avensis T2 Wont Start With Key But Will On Tow

this is my first post so bear with me...

2003 avensis diesel will not start with the key but starts very easily with a tow. it is turning over fine but wont start. i have drained water from the filter, removed injector and turned it over but no diesel is spitting up. it wont start with a jump either. my mechanics computer showed up no faults but advised me it could be the injector pump, starter or the key needs programmed.

the car did run very low on diesel last week which may have resulted in water/dirt getting into the system?

i am taking the car to toyota tomorrow to put it on their computer so that the injector pressure can be tested and enquire about the key.

has anyone any further advice?!

Hi mate,

all I can think right now is that the car is losing a live electrical feed that it should have in the "start position" on the ignition switch, the switch may be faulty or a fuse has gone but as i don't have the wiring diagram to hand i'm only guessing.

Regards Pete.

You would have to be very good with autoelectrics to sort it yourself. I would think that a trained Toyota techie would know straight away what the fault is without diagnostics but only time will tell, best of luck GMC25 anyway and let us know on the forum how you went on at the dealers.

Regards Pete.

hello mate

it is stupid engine that does not eat water :D

ok do not be in panic, but reply the following:

- ok you ve drained water (are you sure your tankn is free of water????)

- why did you dismantle injector??? (a small dirt could penetrate between atomizer and its needle valve) --> this will bring you poor injection + smoky exhaust + blocking of EGR + T/C ---- it was your mistake;

- what is condition of your Battery, if you could not crank the engine?

- what lights are ON in ignition key position?

- try to do the following: have an air escaped from fuel filter (after have changed) and be careful with O-rings not to damage them. It is understood a booster pump manualy driven must be applied (located on the upper lid);

- be sure that the ignition must be ON when pumped, otherwise both SCVs will be closed and do not allow diesel to be sucted into the HP injection pump.

- in case you can not crank - OK -- unscrew a tube that connects HP injection pump with common rail and tow the car when ignition remains ON ----> you should put some white cotton rags around the HP pump and rail to prevent diesel leaks. You will see either diesel or water again (!!!) to evaluate what fluid inside the pump. Your task is to push the water from the pump (if any).

- Once you see rags like sponge with diesel -- OK have all tubes mounted on their spots and tight.

- Now your injection system is deemed OK.

- the following task is to find what is wrong with el circuit.

Good luck/Igor

Hey Igor / Pete,

i passed your information onto my mechanic who sought further advice from another mechanic. he had a more complex computer and it showed up that my starter motor is not turning fast enough to start the car. the motor is to be refurbished or replaced tomorrow. So heres to hoping it works. thanks for your advice and i will post again tomorrow to let you know the outcome.

thanks again,

Gary
