im doing about 15k a year miles in my 1998 Avensis 1.8 GS and i figure its time for a belt change, currently on 116k miles and past its MOT today with no trouble! - Well chuffed.

how many belts are there in my car?

i know of:

timing belt

Power Steering belt

is there any more?

and best place to buy? buy genuine or 3rd party?

Thanks guys

If you buy a timing belt from anywhere other than toyota, make sure that it's a 'Gates' belt. In my opinion they are the only option other than genuine worth considering. (they probably make 75% of genuine belts)

Hi Just done mine, they are alternator, air con if you have that and power steering on the side of the engine, very easy job just watch that the crankshaft pulley is not wobbling as that will destroy the alternator and air con belt. Crankshaft pulley was my problem. Bought my belts 3rd party but I would by timing belt as genuine.

Assuming you have the 7AFE engine (I think that's the one, not the vvti).

I did mine and the crankshaft bolt was the hardest thing to get off. If I remember right then it's a pretty easy job.

The engine is non-interference too so the cam belt snapping is not such a heart stopper , still wouldn't recommend it.

I used and followed the Haynes manual and had no real issues. Buy, beg or borrow a cracker bar (long socket thingy) for the crankshaft. A spray of releasing oil here and there will do you good.

Need to tighten the steering belt up a lot or it screechs.

If you take your time and check things it is not a difficult job.

Oh and if you cover the holes to the sparkplugs make sure whatever you cover it with cannot be drawn in by a suction from the piston (not going in to details, past ***** up).

Best of luck.
