Hi all.....

Please can you help me out......

Yesterday I got a call from my parents to say the Avensis has broken down and wouldn't start, they were driving along and it started coughing and spluttering.. they got it going again but only went a few meters before coming to a halt and refusing to start again.. I turned up and called GEM Motoring assist who arrived in 30 mins and put the car on a flat bed (where it started 1st time) and recovered it back home..

The car refuses to fire up, the remote key locks & unlocks car ok, no warning lights, the starter spins but the engine doesn't kick in..

Any suggestions please

car is a 1.8 Toyota Avensis GLS R registration

many thanks

Andy L

look at distributor and htleads,

check for spark

How does one check for spark? Is there any possibility of damaging the electronics if one just pulls a HT lead and holds it near the engine block?

This won't cause a problem. If you have spark, I would suggest that the plugs are swamped with petrol. Take them all aout and dry them off. The car should then jump into life.

It is possible that your cambelt has snapped. Remove the end cover to confirm.

hello

have sparks screw out.

have el circle checked by multitester.

in case of circle lack -- I'd have them baked on kitchen gas candle.

besides - clean surfaces between central electrode and a "minus" thread.

it must to cure all spsarks.

but it is understood somthing is wrong with el control for spparks resulting no circle in each one.

Distributorless ignition system, could be the coil pack, could be no signal to coil, could be crank sensor or simply a poor connection. Check connection to crank sensor and connections to coil etc.

Really needs to be 'hands on' with a multimeter after that.
