Changing Headlight Unit On 2003 Mk2 Avensis

I have a 2003 avensis and have suffered the melting bulb holder issue, sadly just out of the extended warranty period. Toyota wanted £260 to replace the light unit, so I thought I'd have a go myself.

I've got hold of a new headlamp unit and am planning on replacing this myself. I've heard the best way is to remove the bumper. How difficult is this? I'm reasonably mechanically competent, and have the help of a friend who's used to working on cars.

So basically, has anyone changed a headlight unit themsleves, and if so how hard was it to remove the bumper etc
