Broken Turbo

Hi there,

I am the proud owner of a lovely avensis verso d4d 2001. its been a great car until about 2 weeks ago when it started to lose pick up. then she started drinking oil with blue smoke coming out of the exhaust when she is started up. Nice garage man says that the turbo is knackered. Only problem being, where do i get a cheap turbo? is there such a thing as cheap turbo lol? contacted toyota and they would like £837 for the bit alone. Another small problem being i got the part number from toyota, but it seems to relate to the toyota picnic. are the turbos inter changable between models? or have i been given the wrong model number? It could be a costly mistake to make. Any advice that you guys could give would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Abbi

The part number is Toyota part number only, not the turbo manufacturers number. You should be able to get a reconditioned, part exchange turbo from a motor factors who should be able to give a price from the vehicle details. (model, chssis number etc.) They are always a pricey item though.

To help extend the life of the turbo, always let the engine idle for a minute before switching the engine off, this allows the turbo a little time to cool off and the turbine to slow down. The turbo casing on the exhaust side can be actually glowing red hot after a good thrash, the turbine achieves extremely high rpm.

Good luck with the hunt for the turbo but I would be tempted to leave it to the garage to find one for you, saves you the hassle, garage wont give warranty on it if you supply your own.

To Abbi789.

Try www.btnturbo.com. They are the largest importers & suppliers of all turbo brands throughout the UK. They have a 2009 on-line catalogue or straight phone call may help reduce the cost. They may supply re-con units also ????

To Abbi789.

Sorry. I should have pointed out, as with most car manufacturers that use turbos for specific models. Turbos are supplied by outside companies ie: Garrett turbos being one that most people would be familiar with. So all you need is prefix numbers of your old turbo to find the right match for your vehicle via above mentioned company or any other company you deal with.

Regards, Beagh.

hello mate

It's a wrong way to evaluate turbocharger condition basing on the company name only.

It's understood this unit must be dismantled and measured all gaps etc.

In cacse this one has been overhauled, then it must be considered as OK, but in any case you have to have all the works don to repair it as for 2nd hand spare.

Cheers/Igor
