Hi,

I'm trying to pin down a noise on my 2002 2.0 D4D avensis and want to check the gearbox oil level as part of the process. Can anyone describe to a novice where it is located on the engine and the best way to check it please?

Hi Igor,

It's a manual.

Ta

ok each gear box has two plugged holes:

- drain hole;

- pouring + checking hole.

the first one is located in the bottom, but second is positioned on the side to pour gear oil..

it is not need to have a deepstick as in auto. the oil is poured one time and serves perioud as specified.

the main idea is not to have a leaks from gear box.

cheers/Igor

Thanks for that Igor,

there seems to be a a slight leak ( smells of gear oil, not engine ) so just wanted to check level. Vehicle has done 93000 miles and started making a whining/rumbling noise(whell bearings okay already checked) so thinking it may be drive shaft related. There are 2 possible bolts for gear oil plug, one is approx 22mm and the other 13mm both underneath facing front of vehicle?. just want to make sure what level it is in view of the oil residue i have found.

Regards

Paul

Paul

do not touch the bottom plug -- it is for oil draining.

Just unscrew the side plug and check level by finger (whether your finget touches an oil inside) otherwise add more oil.

Thanks for your advice igor, much appreciated. I will try that tommorow. I take it that the 13mm is the drain plug

Much obliged
