i have a 99 avensis and at slow speeds when accelerating there is a whistling noise, looking under bonnet it seems to come from the alternator. i have tighned the belt up a little but still there so suspect alternator bearings, is this a common fault on these. its a 7afe 1.8 engine

I recall a couple of my cars in the past having the same symptom.... it is an alternator problem that is not specific to any particular make of car.

Try spraying the centre bearing with a little WD40 and it is just possible the whistle/squeak will go away

changed the alternator belt this morning and the whistling has gone , alternator seemed fine without bet on with no signs of any play and the belt looked good, all i can think of is the rubber had gone a little hard on the belt or something, but i am happy now and for 8 quid well worth doing
