Dont use Struans then, if thats their best price.

go use a good local Mechanic or an Independent 'Garage', you have plenty around.

Or DIY.

Toyota Dealefship know how to charge so that Customers end up going to good Independents.

Maybe the Showroom is not so fancy or the Coffee, but its the Workshop that matters.

You paid £170 for Toyota to change spark plugs? May I ask why as that's ridiculous!

If a garage of any kind told me this, I'd laugh in their face and walk off. I feel sorry for you, I really do. I was in to collect my IQ mats last month and happen to quiz the service department guy about prices.. think that's the last time he'll ever see me step foot in their dealership!! I know a ex Citroen master technician that now has his own garage so I'm one of the lucky ones I suppose and I recommend him to everyone I know! I hate hearing people getting robbed in dealerships. My brother certainly did for his new car at Peter Vardy, he got sold everything under the sun which included the famous 'lifetime valet kit'. They claimed his car had it on when he picked it up.. few weeks later I valeted it for him and the paint certainly had no protection on it! Robbing gits!!

Ok Guys

We need to know what you have to remove, can you get away with not removing the wiper motor and link ish?

When to other garage, Guy says £40 hour 2 hours work but have not worked on IQ before. My concern is that at the end of the day you don't know what they will hit you with, guy says you can get away with not removing this and that but if that's the case why is the workshop manual stating take this off etc.

We need to find someone who has done this job so we all have understanding what has to be removed and what can be left along so we can get these 3 plugs in. At the end of the day we all are going to change our plugs so lets get this done and dusted because we don't want to pay £160 to change 3 plugs.

I have found most workshop manuals tell you to remove things to get certain jobs done. Then when you do the job yourself following the instructions you think "I didn't need to remove that" & "I could have done it this way instead". That is the case I found on my old '86 Mini, Gilrea Runner & Gilera Fuoco scooters and old Golf and 2009 Grande Punto.

So i guess the only way to really find out is, get the manual, buy all the parts listed and first time round follow the manual instructions. Then you will realise what steps you could have shortened or even omitted altogether.

Maybe not, when you consider they are "good" for 60,000 miles? The number of people on here that have done that distance have probably taken it in for a service and not DIY'd it.

I always used to do my own servicing, but when you think how many electronics are on it that need the diagnostic machine plugging in to check for errors and update software if necessary, that kind of think isn't available to the home mechanic. So I took out a plan for my iQ. I will still do maintenance repairs my self though along with the brakes.

Yes good point, may just let it go until the 60,000 miles or when it needs a new cam belt then get the plugs done at same time

do the rest yourself that's not so hard to do like oil change and the rest

One reason I like the 1.0l engine is because it has a timing chain rather than a belt, (I hope I am right about that!), but I didn't reckon on the plugs being such a faff to work on.

Bring back the Ford Escort, all is forgiven.

I believe the 3 cylinder engine has a chain driven cam system. It was one of the selling points for me as I prefer a chain drive, if there is a choice.

I am not sure about the 4 cylinder engine though, as I didn't look into the data on that one.

I hope I am right!

Both the 1.0 and the 1.33 engines are indeed chain driven cams. I was quite happy when I found that out too. :)

I plan to change the plugs on my 1.33 engine soon so will do a write up and photos to show what I did. I have the manual but I reckon you can do it without taking so much of the car apart and leave the wiper mechanism where it is.

I can tell you guys that the IQ sparks lasts at least 130.000 kms. Because that what i have driven and i am still on the original sparks? How do i know? My car has never seen a garage, hahahaha

80,000 miles is fine,

but those are your spark plugs and you know how you drive or use your car, fuel used etc

& if it is still achieving good economy.

Others might want to change plugs before 80,000 miles.

some 2009 iQ's might be in their 5th year and not done even 40,000 miles and might benefit from new plugs.

I'd be changing spark plugs every 20-30,000 miles without fail. Not just because it's a serviceable item but ever tried removing spark plugs that have been inside a engine for 80,000 miles? I have and it takes some amount of brut force to remove which tells you all you need to know! Personal opinion of course :)

  • 4 weeks later...

ive had a look at changing the plugs on my 1.0 and think you can get away with just unbolting the throttle body without draining the coolant, as it looks like a sealed unit. then just pulling it out the way to get to the middle plug. still a bit puzzled why Haynes didn't do a manual for this car ?

They only do popular cars. Spoke to them on the phone and they said it costs them a lot of money to produce the book and have to justify it with sales. Also did you know that they also have other extra sheets that go with the manual that you can ask for, for instance i had a D reg Granada and the Haynes manual doesn't contain information about the Air Con, so i contacted them and they sent me about 6 extra sheets on the Air Con init free

Alan PM me if you want to do your on servicing on your iQ

Robert

Launch the programme and on the left choose engine then on the right go down slowly and you will see spark plugs first the cal then the 4

next to the mention of spark plug it offers you info, removal and installation

in the removal section it takes you through the stages including the throttle body removal
