Gen 6 Firing Problem

Hi All,

I have a 1998 Gen 6 GT Celica. Just replaced the plugs, rotar arm & dizzy cap and its now running on 3 cylinders.

It is very lumpy and sounds like a scooby on tick over....not impressed.

I have also ordered some ht leads and that will be my last attempt unless someone out there has any ideas.

I have checked that the HT leads are in the correct positions.

The rotar arm fits into the same place as the old one (2 screws).

The dizzy cap fitted straight back onto the old position...

The plugs are NGK's (yes they are nipped up)..

Any ideas....Have I moved something I shouldn't...

(Oil filter, New oil & fuel filter fitted 500 miles ago)..

Thanks in advance

Big E.

Over the years I have learnt from experience to only fit one item at a time and check engine after each change. (not plugs of course). This is because I have often serviced cars and found that a new plug, dizzy cap or rotor arm are faulty.

Thanks for that. When I get the new leads, if that does not cure the problem I still have the old parts so I will start from scratch again.

Cheers

what you need are insulated pliers , with engine running ,remove 1 plug lead at a time , if its worse replace and move to the next , when with plug lead removed it makes no difference , that is the problem plug or problem lead.

I was just going to say the same thing. Have you tried putting back the old parts and starting again?

I personally would remove a HT lead from the spark. Fire it up, see if its the same or worse. Essentially as your remove working HT's your engine will only be running on 2 cylinders (probably cut out straight away). Whn you remove a HT and it starts to do the same 3 cylinder struggle then you know you've located either a dodgy HT or dodgy Spark. If you change both of these and it still does it then it must be the roter arm.

Hi all,

Well I took everything off and re installed. I tested the old leads and 2 of them where shot.....

I invested in some Magnecores and everting (touch wood) seem s to be running great..

Thanks again everyone.... New listing to follow....
