1.8 Vvti Short Engine

We have had our Our 2001 Avensis for a few months. I somehow didn't come across the oil problem in my research otherwise I'd have hung on to our Carina.... It is coming up for 60,000 miles (has stamps for all services, but not all dealer stamps) and burns more oil than it should. I presume at this age Toyota won't help, even though the mileage is low? Even if they did, presumably the high rates they charge would offset any contribution they made?

I am looking at getting new short engine - does anyone have an idea of the cost of this? Can I entrust this to a independent garage? Can anyone recommend one within 50 miles or so of Eastbourne, pref. a jap specialist?

you could try toyota mate worth a bash,the warranty was extended to 7 years or approx 100,000 miles you might be lucky.if that doesn't work you could try contacting customer care.

I take it you don't mean brand new ENGINE to be purchased from whoever ????? This is a well known fault with some of these engines, why is your independent garage (when you locate one) not rebuilding engine for you with help of local car engineering firm. Sorry i am in the trade so i look at it from a different angle, it would be great to bring it to local Toyota specialist. But, why are you taking a chance with purchasing second hand engine that could still be an oil burner. If your local garage just does an engine swap, they are just FITTERS, i would have thought it too be a better bet to have possible re-bore & new pistons (Mahle being one make) to cure problem, fitters fit, proper mechanics repair.

If you have to pay to have the work done, i'd be tempted to sell the car and buy something different, changing the engine doesn't guarantee anything because even some people who have had replacement engines find they still burn oil after a while, and the cost of doing the work probably isn't going to be much less than the car's worth.

I wouldn't chance a 2ndhand one for this. I just want a satisfactory solution to this shameful saga. If getting the engine rebored & re-pistoned is a better solution, then I'm up for that its's just that, regrettably, these days the labour charges tend to make repairs more expensive than replacement.

What do you get if you take it to Mr T? a short block or a rebuild? As long as it is satisfactory and means the car tands a chance of matching our previous Carina then I'll go for it.

Also, without a recommendation, how do I know that an engineering firm/independent is any good? I tend to do most work myself, but a local independent has done stuff I can't face/too busy to do, but this engine investment is in a different league from a new CV joint or whatever. This is going to cost nearly as much as I paid for the car, but if we have a sorted car, it will be worth it. That's why I was after a Jap specialist - someone who had done this before or someone who does this sort of thing all the time rather than a generalist who gets cars through the MOT.

Your best bet is to obtain short block from Toyota. I just mentioned engineering firm as we have used them for some 20 odd years now. I guess all you can do is price up short block from Toyota to fit or independent garage & compare against price of an engine rebuild.

I'm just of the opinion that a lot of garages would rather do a straight engine swap than have local firm do a rebuild.

Hi UserError. Beagh spoke alot of truth concerning your problem. Well worth thinking about it from outside the box that you are in. You say the price of the repair will be close to the value of the car. Is it worth it?.
