Engine Management Light

Hi. The engine management light on my 2004 (54) Corolla 2.0D4D is constantly on. The local mechanic gave me some Havoline diesel system cleaner to put in after which I filled up and have just been for a blast on the motorway doing around 80mph in 4th gear to get rid of the gunk in the system, it threw out some smoke but not much. I have just returned and the light was still on.

Since I've had the car (about 1 week) I've been running it on a mix of Shell v-power diesel and Shell regular diesel, the car came with full toyota service history but I don't know what diesel the previous owner was running it on. Next thing to investigate would be changing the fuel filter I think?

Anyone got some advice for me, I'm quite worried about this since I use the car everyday and it's crucial to me getting around!

Thanks in advance.

hi,you will have to take it for a diagnostic scan as changing parts will result in a lot of cash spent and may not fix the problem, get it scanned and the codes wrote down then clear all the codes and see what happens when its driven if the light comes back on see what codes are stored and theres your problem, code readers the way forward.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll have it read by the local jap specialist mechanic who is also my uncle :D

One thing - I can't help but think that the poor quality of diesel they send us from certain parts of the world means that this problem will happen again and again periodically?

Well I was just thinking, because the car drives absolutely perfect spot on nothing wrong. I'm thinking the increased cetane rating of V-Power diesel, added to the further increase in cetane rating of the fuel resulting from me putting the Havoline fuel system cleaner into the car has sent the engine management haywire?
