Water Pump

Hey

Guys just had my 4 year/40000 mile service and apprently my water pump is leaking even though there has been know sign on my drive ever of water or oil. Has anyone else had any problems??

i ask because myself and a guy from work who has the celica ts have had our 40k services within 1 month of each other and we have both never seen anything. he has seen some since the service which he thinks is fishy and now i have been lined up for work on the waterpump we are a little suspious of the dealer..........................

on another front he was also told on his last service his brake s with unbalanced on his rigth front and so are mine according to my visual inspection. he has had these looked at by a brake specialist and apprently there's nothing wrong with them. i had my pads n discs replaced last year as a warrenty item and they are saying i have the same and its because i only do 6500 miles a year that they seaze a little and they need stripping and cleaning then regreased.

anyones thoughts please????

also my belt rear idealler is noisey under acceleration does anyone know if this is a big job!

Now may be a good time to seek a second opinion from another garage.

You seem to have lost your trust in the garage that serviced your car.

Have you spoken to the garage that carried out the servicing and expressed your misgivings about the quality of their service?

Underused brakes have been known to require a little extra maintenance to keep them in good order.

Hello mate water pumps can be quite common if your vehicle runs pink coolant,dont ask me why but we do seem to see alot of them.You can tell easily if its leaking by looking at it,if it's leaking there will be a build up of pink powder underneath the pump coming from behind the pulley of the pump.The tensioner is not to bad but you will have to remove the engine mount on the timing chain end because the main bolt that holds the tensioner is quite long so you will need to jack the engine up so that the bolt clears the chassis.Im not sure i understand what is going on with your brakes.If you had new pads and discs last year the calipers should have been checked and freed of then i would be surprised if they have siezed already.Sometimes i find that if you find a quiet road somewhere get the vehicle upto about 30mph and then stamp on the brake and hold it untill the vehicle stops that can sometimes free off a siezed caliper if it's not to bad.

thanks guys, yeah i'm getting a second opinion ASAP.

it was getting dark after i got the car up so i'm jacking her up tomorrow and checking for the signs you've mentioned!!! i've also put a big plastic sheet under the engine to look for any drips or water or oil over night and will continue to until i get a second opinion!!! also i'm going to look for un even wear on the brake disc in question as 24% difference is quite alot i should be able to see a difference in the wear of the disc i would have thought!!!

could it be an easy DIY job to get some lubricant behind the pads????

they want £80 for the pump job. is it easy to remove??? as i could re-seal the housing myself!!!

Water pumps always leak (and to a certain extent they're designed to)

There's a a seal in the pump and during running it requires an extremely small amount of coolant to run on it's surface to lubricate it. That means a little will leak past during running. The amount leaking past should be so small that you don't notice the coolant level really reducing from the expansion tank from week to week. The pump actually has a catch pocket in it (and you can see a bulge behind the pulley if you look from the bottom of the pump. It's a common design feature on almost every make of car) to hide it to try and avoid misdiagnosis

What does leak past evaporates off and since there is a bright pink colour to the coolant it leaves this crystalised on the outside of the pump. Eventually this gets noticed and I'll place bets this is why the dealer thinks it's leaking. It's really only the fact that what gets left behind is a bright pink that makes it so noticeable

If I were you I'd clean up the pump take a note of the level of coolant in the expansion tank. If you don't see the level dropping and a coolant leaking down the engine leave it alone (if the dealer was any good they'd have done this first anyway).

If you did decide to change the pump it's an absolute piece of the proverbial to do so I'd save the money and do it yourself.

1. Drain coolant from the engine (there's a tap in the radiator and one in the exhaust side of the cylinder block)

2. Remove the auxillary belt (you'll need a 19mm spanner from memory to take the tension off the belt)

3. Remove the pulley (5 x bolts, need a 10mm socket. Also keep a note of where the bolts came from, from memory 2 are shorter than the rest)

4. There's an o-ring seals the pump to the chain cover you may decide you want to change this at the same time (be careful not to pinch it during fitting and make sure the groove it fits in is clean)

5. Refit the pump (making sure the longer/shorter bolts are in the correct holes)

6. Refit the belt and refill the system (making sure you don't airlock it)

my manager at work as just taken in his celica t sport for a service and was told the water pump was leaking, hes getting it done free under warranty :D
