Loosing Water

Hi all

this could get kind of long winded and for that I apologise now.

My UK petrol 93 previa has had a water leak now for over 2 years. Ive had the fuel rail off on a number of occassions myself and No2 injector is corroded and the inlet port fills up with water when its cold. When you start it again it misses for about 30 seconds whilst it chucks it back out the exhaust pipe again then its fine, thats the miss fire. Its never over heated before and had a new rad about 6 yrs ago. Ive had the head gasket checked for gasses in the header tank on two separate occassions an there is no sign of that either and there's no water in the oil or oil in the water. All this to me points to a cracked head, but I dont want to take the job on myself as I havent really got the know how... Lol. basically I always f**k the Cam timing up again.... Now its started really smoking bad when cold and once it warms up its fine again.

A local garage looked at it recently for me and quoted to do the head gasket but didnt do it in the end because they came to the conclusion that it is over fueling when cold and that is causing the smoke. Ive never heard of this before as cars do run rich when cold because they are effectively running on choke although I know its all down to engine management these days. They changed the fuel rail for a secondhand one for me and they said there's no corrosion on the injector but if I can see it why cant they, they also said there was no water in No2 inlet either. they did a compression test and whilst I cant remember the figures they said they are all within tolerences. I think really they just didn't want the job either, Im sure these sniff tests are fine but surely the only real way to check a head gasket is to take it apart and whilst your there pressure test the head too......

Can anyone help me please this things driving me mad.......

had a kind of similar problem - losing water with no signs. Had compression tests done and we eventually came to the thought that there was something wrong with the head gasket. there was a mis-fire on idle but seemed ok on the road.

Eventually had the engine taken out (these things are very heavy and awkward to get to - the engine and gearbox was taken out as a single unit. Found that the head had a crack and that was the reason- a 2ndhand head acquired and fitted and all is ok now. Now all that cheap to do as there was a bit of labour involved. I had read that the diesel Previa was prone to heads cracking but didn't realise that it can happen to the petrol ones. We couldn't find out why - I only bought the car 6 months ago.
