T180 - Strange Turbo Noise

Hi guys,

My T180 makes a wierd noise when it's cold - the best way I could describe it is as a sort of "WOOOOOOOOOO" noise. It's done this since I bought it a couple of months ago.

It's definitely turbo related - it starts when the turbo starts to spin up, and the pitch goes up and down with the turbo. Once it's come on boost properly, the WOOOO noise gives way to the normal turbocharger whistly/sucky noise.

Once the car's warmed up, the odd noise goes away.

Anyone else's car do this, or is it time to take it back to the dealer to get it checked out?

Hello

Providing there is no loss of power or any flat spots this is normal. Especially from cold, the bearings in the turbo are not up to operating temperature and on v.cold starts the engine raises the RPM to inject more fuel to get things warmer quicker.

Noise is pretty normal although it should go with a mile or 2. It can also sound like a siren and because it is a variable vane turbo try to accelerate gently and not above 2.2k RPM to see if the noise is reduced.

If the noise continues after a few miles or the noise becomes very loud or you loose power or have abnormal flat spots then go and have it checked. And to clarify abnormal flat spots would very noticeable, and not your typical turbo lag you would find by requesting too much power off boost.

That's exactly it - sounds like a siren. Glad it's normal!

There aren't any flat spots or loss of power, so I guess I should stop worrying. Thanks for the reply :)

Have you ever started your car in minus-temperatures? My old beloved Volvo 240 worked like a charm and I'm not so serious after all whining, Got to have some business in between, some1 thoughts that I'm a synonym...
