I did a race with a friend that had a Renault 5 GT (no-turbo) with my Corolla 1.6 110hp... even that his car was lighter and more powerful, I could eat him not much but just enough. If the 90' car wasn't taken care of for sure you will dump him easly with a new TS.

20 years later some cars don't have anymore the max hp that they had when they were young ! ;)

A mate of mine swears blind that his cousins renault 5 turbo would kill a Tsport! I laughed cos there a 1400cc turbo single cylinder 8 valve, but it is very light and about 160bhp per ton!

I said would it beat a type R? He replied no! And we all know Tsports just have that edge over them.

What do you lot think bout it and old school cars?

Is HIS 160 to the ton? If so it would destroy a Tsport easy. My starlet was running 189bhp @ the fly, fully stripped and i could 100% say it would properlly wreck my tsport and that was justa "wee" 1.3 :)

would like to say you would win but never under estimate a renault 5, but i wouldn't worry to much bud as the chances are it will break down lol

Funny but i dont recall them being unreliable, bits may have dropped off occasionally, but reliability issues i do not recall ??

As for old versus new, new is not always better.

Anyone see the Top Gear on Old Vs New .........

300ZX Vs 350Z ........ no guesses which one won...... ;)

I googled images of the R5T and it looks insane! lol, Renault could have done with a better financed design department... :lol2:

Unless they went for function over form...

If you look at any Renault car from that era they are all bland. Remember it was the 80's.

But the 80's gave use the GTi!

i must admit that my first car was a 1989 orion 16i ghia, it died so i got another one exactly the same!! lol

I can't knock the orions, when I first started driving I went through five Escorts from a mark 2 on all red all full of rust but cheap to run, then I had 2 capris 2.0s you could say I was a sucker for punishment.

The 2.8 Injection Capri is to die for! Especially when you freeze to death because you had to sell the house to pay for it's constant repair bills....... :lol2:

Still, a car I would never say no to! :)

Was the car I always wanted but could not affort to insure one. I was paying £550.00 for a 2.0s at the time, this was 18 years ago when I was a lad

There is a lad local to me that has R5 its most certainly not stock but it has me everytime in the CTS.

Ugly as hell mind, but they are quick.

Doubt there are any stock ones left, they all seem to have had the chav treatment.

Bugs

I thought the Renault 5 GT Turbo's were 115bhp, that makes them 135bhp per tonne. The Nissan March Super Turbo was 110bhp but lighter giving them 143bhp per tonne, crazy for a 930cc engine.

What else is there that was similar at the time? Trying and find the highest bhp per tonne available.

Surely it makes the topic null and void if the R5 is modded and the CTS is'nt! nearly every car could, with the money, be made faster than a CTS. Oh and your all wrong, forget fords and renault for old school kicks it has to be an OPEL MANTA GT/E coupe.

hhhm I still love the thought of a Mk1 Cortina with the Dual Weber Carbs!! I am really considering buying one for my next car. I'll actually be legally allowed to drive by the time

  • 2 weeks later...

I had a R5 GTT for a week years ago, it didn’t start with a warm engine had no brakes and a squeaky clutch (worse than the CTS :o ) the turbo lag was immense and it had a comedy dump valve, great fun unlike the boring boxes we have today :lol:

Opel Manta. Ahhh, I've only seen one of those before and it was on a rally course.

5 mins later, he'd slid into a tree.

For proper "old skool" driving, I'd have a Lotus 7 any day.

I don't care if it's less realiable than the R5. Tiny engines, but just go like stink.
