Blue Smoke

Hi everybody,

I've a LC3 3.0ltr D4D with 50000Miles on the clock, had from new and serviced by the dealer

where I bought it from.

The problem I'm getting is that if I park the vehicle looking down hill when I start the engine runs lumpy for

a second or two and the blue smoke that comes out the exhaust is quite a lot and then it clears. If I park on the flat or

looking up hill nothing clean as a whistle. I've had no power loss or anything like that and it runs clean with 30+ Mpg.

I'm thinking that oil must be getting into the inlet manifold some where does anybody have any ideas.

Thanks

You need to read up on the problems with the D4D engines, loads of info on tlocuk regarding injector seals and blocked sump filters.

hi mate

sure the manual is yr table book :)

secindly do not search deeply but start from fuel filter changing. sometimes this criates unequal cycle injection leeding to a bluue smoke.

cheers/Igor

After reading up on the tlocuk forum I took the plunge and took out my Injectors

and found that No 1 & 2 where leaking gases past the copper sealing washer and

there was carbon build up in the Injector ports and the Inlet manifold.

I also removed the sump and found carbon on the oil pickup pipe, the EGR valve

was pretty mucky as well so I was getting oil being pushed out of the breather into

the Turbo housing and then backup through the Intercooler into the Inlet manifold.

I had to take the parts to my local Denso agent to be cleaned properly and I'm in

the midst of putting back together. Hopefully I won't get anymore problems.

Well it looks like you have caught the problem before the engine goes bang, it's a shame that Toyota UK are not owning up to the problem with D4D engines, although they seem to have done so in Ireland.

Take it to another dealer or contact Toyota UK, tell them your not happy with the dealer and want it sorted.

Also when it smokes do you get a lot of noise from the engine.

Are the injectors faulty or do they just wear out quickly? Are the replacements better and should everyone just replace them before having the blue smoke problem? It almost seems like Toyota should issue a recall and replace them all.

The problem is mainly the seals at the base of the injectors. On LCs up to about 2008 these were made of copper, and eventually let exhaust gases go past. These exhaust gases end up in the oil, which goes sludgy, blocking the oil strainer and/or turbo. This can wreck the engine.

Toyota have been replacing engines of affected cars up to about 5 years old.

There is now a service campaign out to change the copper washers to the later aluminium versions. I don't know whether they will cover a 2004. If your car isn't covered I'd recommend paying to have it done. It doesn't have to be at a Toyota dealer - a good diesel specialist would be able to do it. Regard it as preventative maintenance the way you would a timing belt.

Your LC4 should then be good for a further 100,000 miles.
