Rav4 5th Gear Popping Out

Hi,

I have a 2006 model RAV4 XT3 and all has been fine with the vehicle until this week. Whilst driving on the motorway the gear stick popped out of gear whilst in 5th gear. Now everytime I go into 5th gear the gear stick pops out within about 20-30 seconds. This does not happen in any other gears.

I can hold the gear stick on place, just with one finger, and the car drives fine. It fells like the gear is not locking in properly becasue I can knock the gear stock into neutral from 5th with one finger agaon, but when in other gears I can't do this. The car is 3 years ol (just out of warranty) and has done 46,000 miles, which I don't thiknk is a lot of miles for a Toyota.

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be and how it could be fixed? Any help would be appreciated.

Terry

Hello Terry and welcome to the Forum

I am assuming yours is a 4.3 model if you say it has just gone out of warranty or is it one of the last 4.2 models?

The 4.2s seem to have had a problem of wear on 5th gear which causes exactly the symptoms you have mentioned - there are several threads about it if you do a search. It is repairable and you can buy the parts from Kingo LINK our parts meister at a discount. If it is a 4.3, then I am not sure. I know that the connection from the selector to the box is via cable and it could be related to that area maybe :unsure:

Best to wait for one of our excellent technical gurus to look in - they have a wealth of experience with these vehichles.

Good Luck

the most common reason was resting ones paw on the gearstick whilst driving in 5th gear...then after a wee bit of time it pops out of gear.... the fix for that (think it was earlier models) was replacing some bits in the gearbox - not so expensive tho.

PM me the VIN number and I will check it out for you, the 5th gear issue was on early models, dont think yours would be the same type of fault

Kingo :thumbsup:

Hi and welcome to the club.

As Dave says we haven't had it on a 4.3 but it is virtually the same box on both the 4.1 and the 4.2 which can both suffer with jumping out of fifth so we have no reason to suspect that a 4.3 won't do the same. It is the Achilles heel of the petrol RAVs (well, along with oxygen sensors).

Like the others it can be fixed in situ so if push comes to shove you can do it yourself if you are competent or find a decent garage with a good mature mechanic who has had experience of stripping gearboxes. There are a few tools which can be made and you can get all the bits off Kingo.

However, before you go down that route you should go back to a Toyota dealer and tell them that you would like to pursue a "policy warranty claim" on the grounds that it it is unreasonable for a fault of that nature on such a new vehicle. Now! Although this really is a premature failure and we know it is an age old fault, the first thing they will look at is your knob. Why? Because they will tell in a second if drive with your hand on it............. ignore them, it is a fact that if you drive with your hand on the GEAR knob you can load the synchro and accelerate an already potential synchro hub failure so if it is all polished and shiny (stop it) they may be reluctant and don't mention it unless they do then denigh it vehemently. You have to be polite but persistent. In a Toyota dealer this is going to cost quite a lot of money so you need to try to get them to do it under warranty - it is quite possible. If after exhaustive mithering you don't have any success, I can give you all the instructions for you or your local garage.

Good luck

Hi

Many thanks for this advice.... One thing I don't do is drive with my hand on the gear knob, I am very much a 2 handed driver, so that is not an issue. I will

call in at my Toyota garage and do this face to face rather than on the phone.

for what its worth, the speedo ring that drives the sensor and is fitted in the gearbox came adrift in my number 2 RAV. Ended up cheaper buying a 2nd hand gearbox complete (they sent the tranny as well) all for £200 and then £250 changing it which i thought was deads reasonable. Bgr was that it was on my low mileage RAV - the racing RAV has done twice the mileage and despite ancs warnings, it still disnae pop oot of 5th gear.... it is developing a keeness to jump out of first as soon as I touch the stick but thats cos its anticpating me changing gear quick and slamming the clutch so its trying a self-preservation method. cars are not jst for Christamsa by the way!!

Hi

Many thanks for your note..... I have reposted this problem as I couldnt find the original, but I have just foudn it again... I spoke to toyota and they were not helpful. they told me to ake the car to a main dealer first to check it out. They had no ideas what the problem was, or so they say, and quoted me £900 just to strip the box to find out what the problem was. they also quoted me an additional £1,500 to replace the 5th gear, if that what the problem turned out to be...

You mentioned you hav ethe instructions and parts source etc. that would be fantastic if you could help. I have a local motors engineers who specialise in gearboxes who I can take it to with the instructions etc.

Have a look at this. You have to buy Toyota parts and Kingo will do you the best deal. Let your mechanic have a read of this 4.1 box because it shows you can make the tools;

http://rav4world.com/forums/viewtopic.php?...hlight=5th+gear

However, take him this as this is your 5 speed box and if he is any good he will work it out - a good competant DIYer would;

remove_5th_gear.pdf

replace_5th_gear.pdf

BTW there are breakers that pop up on eBay with 4.3s. Check the price of a second hand box and compare it with price of parts and labour on yours.

Hi Guy's

My Fith gear keeps on popping out too!!!

Does anyone know a garage near Rucorn where I could take it to get the synchro replaced? I've had a few offers for recon or used boxes, but they were astronomical!!! Rav4.2 d4d gx 2001

Thats pretty close to where Parts-King works, so if you supply him with less-fattening pies, he'll do it for you in his lunchtime. :lol: :lol:
