Water Leak In Boot

Well having got over the angst as to whether the 03 avensis replacing the faithful corolla (sob) would turn out to be an oil guzzler - ok so far about 1L per first 2000 miles, a bit disappointed to find that the well in the boot drivers side where the jack fits has started to fill up with water. I cannot see where it could be coming from as the boot seals look ok. The boot itself is dry just the well about 2pints of water after standing a couple of days.

Any ideas where this could be coming from - is it a known problem?
