Replace Avensis Batteries

hi guys,

I have a toyota avensis 54 plate in UK. I was about to replace my key Battery with a CR2016 lithium Battery, but my friend told me not to do it myself as it will mess up the immobiliser. He recommended that i goto a specialist.

Is this true? Do i need some specialist to simply replace my key Battery? If so, how much approx should they charge?

If this is not true, then is there a special procedure and what is that procedure?

thanks very much

Have you hasd a look in the handbook yet, there is some info in there.

Apart from that I just have to got the dealer to give me one free as the car I bought only had the valet key and one blipper, and i kicked a stink about that (and a whole lot more) as I thnikn the messed up in the preparation of the car.

otherwise i don't know.

shoudl be straightforward.

You can safely replace the Battery yourself. And if in doubt many decent locksmiths will do it for a small fee. My local locksmith usually charges around a fiver.:)

Hi,

I have replaced mine recently & had no problems.

But I have heard that some do have issues.

I replaced mine within 20 seconds.

I don't know, but it may be like a sky remote. With that you have 5 minutes to replace the batteries or the remote needs to be reprogrammed for your tv to work with the sky remote.

Well the thing to do is first ensure your other key is working properly before you attempt anything with that key !

Don't know if the new Avensis is like my old Avensis but on that once the batteries changed you have to reprogram it by following a set procedure thats fully detailed in the User Handbook - its just a case of inserting it into the ignition and opening the drivers door, but in a specific sequence.

Any doubts just pop into your local Toyota dealer, they will have a set price for doing it, perhaps a freebie if you are lucky.

Electronic key fobs are coded in the factory and the code cannot be changed without specialist equipment and software. The idea that batteries must be changed within a certain time limit is a bit of an urban myth designed to scare people into using paid services.

Now I wish I had thought that one up - could have been a nice little earner me thinks.:)

James the key fob remote works on a rolling code so a "grabber" cant be used to copy it.

The remote and the receiver in the car move on to the next code for that particular handset every time it is used, this is why there is a limit on how many remotes you can use on one car, if the remote gets out of sync with the car then it has to be reset.

  • 3 years later...

Just replaced Battery - really easy.

Remove small Phillips screw, prize the two parts of the key apart and the complete button unit will drop out. Prize the cover off and the Battery will be under it. Have the new Battery ready out of its packaging - handle it with a dry tissue so that you do not get finger marks on it (probably not really necessary but advice I was given when I got the new battery). Pop the old one out and IMMEDIATELY pop the new one in. I suspect that too much of a delay would upset the programming. RE-assemble the fob and test it - done. :clown:
