At A Loss To What Is Wrong

I`ve had a lot of help already in here but another wee problem,I had a service then my speedo wouldnt work,the garage didnt have the equipement to test car so I took it to another garage who said it was the sensor and they fitted another one,it still didnt work so they checked all the wiring and there is nothing wrong there either they are flummoxed as I am,can anybody shed on light on what this can be,it has cost us a lot of dosh so far dont want to get rid of car as we love it it`s a 2001 d4-d

Your speedo is not a complicated device but unless you can find a garage who will think about it they will make a mountain out of a mole hill. The bit on the gearbox is shown in the diagram. It is basically an inductive sensor that generates a small voltage that is used to signal the speedo on the dash.

The same speed signal is used by the engine ECU and my feeling is that if the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) wasn't working the ECU would be unhappy and throw up a 0500 fault code. So! By using a digital multimeter it should be possible to lift the vehicle (all wheels free to rotate so a wheel free lift is necessary) and see if the sensor outputs a voltage. Next thing is to check the speedo head as in item 2 of this pdf;

By the looks of things buying won't break the bank but as I said, if the speed signal really isn't being generated I would have expected a fault code and yellow warning light. The only other thing is the circuit is the wires and that is a simple continuity check.

I can kind of forgive them for fitting the VSS but then when it doesn't work they should get stuck into the process not just leave you to sort it out. That is the difference between a fitter and a technician. What do they expect you to do now - just run without a speedo?

I took the diagram to the garage today they haven`t an effin` clue they said they dont have the tool to try and test that they said you get a speedo cluster and we will try it,really cheesing me off now,I said I brought the car in here to get it fixed and you want me to do this.

Is the garage a Jap specialist? If not I would be inclined to seek one out if I were in your position. Either that or a good auto electrician maybe.
