Currently own a 2.0vvt-i auto t-spirit avensis ,chosen for the reliability and build. From owning the vehicle it has constantly been sent back to mr t for engine management light coming on every couple of months for the last 2 years.I got this with only 20000 miles on the clock with a full service toyota history and have now got to 34000 miles. This had one carefull owner ,an old boy in his 60s.I can,t believe how unreliable toyota are and having read the other posts on this forum it seems like toyota are making a mockery and a fortune out of people regarding engine management faults.

My other previous vehicles include 2.5 litre vectra which i owned for 3 years and never had one problem with,a carlton 2.0litre cdx bought with 90000 miles on the clock and had it for four years and never had a problem with before it was stolen and burnt out after covering over 130000 miles.

Why can,t toyota get it right ,this is so frustrating .

I would love to hear your views.

P.S dont buy a avensis you will be skint and dissapointed.Toyota must realise how avensis owners feel.

sorry mate i have to disagree with you on this thread

ive got a 2.2d4d t spirit 2007 with 87k on the clock purchased last aug . one owner from new and every piece of paper and receipt with it. its had all its servicing done at toyota. and apart from tyres, pads and discs the car has only required a water pump because of a slight leak at 70000 miles and still done under warranty.

ive put 2 tyres on the front and diesel in it and thats it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so come on guys these threads are always how disapointed we are with our cars and not how pleased we are !!! i find the car effortless to drive and so comfy

having owned 2 saab 93's one of which was a convertible and 9 other different makes of car this one is by far the best !!!!

we are all to eager to post how bad a car is ... but a bit shy at praising one...................

im sorry for your problems pasherp but you check out other forum sites for other makes of car inc audi & bmw and see how they compare to toyota

i think you will be supprised

regards paul

In all honesty a car forum is not a good place to judge a cars reliability or performance as many people only come to them as last resort when they have problems.

Criticism is always likely to outweigh praise - it's just human nature I suppose. On the other side of the coin many people hate to see their precious much loved car criticised and will do everything to protect its reputation even if they are aware of it's shortcomings and are prepared to live with them.

Personally I have always taken either praise or criticism of a car with a big dallop of salt as many discussions can be coloured with a tinge of emotion - again a normal human response.:)

Having said that I have only been a member for three months and the number of criticisms (non-recall related) of Toyotas seems to be on the increase. Is there something in the water LOL!!

...so where is the best place to get a true car reliability or performance check then? :-))

I've had my 2007 Avensis 2.2 D4D for a year & it has so far been faultless (other than the crap headlights which a bulb upgrade has largely resolved).

It replaced a Vx Omega which was becoming increasingly unreliable & untrustworthy (it was 9 years old after all).

Interestingly when first introduced the least reliable Omegas were those fitted with the BMW 2.5l turbodiesel ...

Before that was a Carlton, a Granada, a couple of Cavaliers, couple of Sierras etc. & they all had their niggles (little & not so little).

The perfect car doesn't exist.

well I have had not had any problems of real concern since ive had mine since 2005. crappy headlights as per usual, but no other dramas. like its been said before, forums are full of moans, and ive had my fair share of rubbish motors. sorry to hear yours has been in and out of the garage, and i would say you have been very unlucky all things considered.

A good independent garage that specialises in the make you are interested in. They tend to have contacts with the dealerships and have knowledge of the weaknesses which may develop over time but they tend not to have a vested interest in trying to defend their brand. They can also give advice on what to look for if buying second hand.:)

Dpends what you want, but probably a good place to start would be the J D Power Survey. This is a survey taken from what owners think about their cars and reliability, the manufacturer has no input so doesn't suffer from marketing spin

I have mine for two years now, and love it despite some issues. I got it with 10K, and have more then 60K now, with no issues. You have to assume people come here when they have problems, or to reaserch before they buy, so opinion will be skewed.

The only complaint I have today is that I was twice mistaken for a Taxi - one lady got in, and almost closed the door to my astonishment... :o My wife was not amused... she was just behind her!

One careful owner in his 60s, are you also a careful owner?, if so perhaps you should throw caution to the wind and give it some revs from time to time and clean it out!.

I am now on my third Avensis one petrol and two diesel, never had a problem with any of them.

Will move to my fourth Avensis in a row in June (downsizing to 2.0 diesel from 2.2 diesel).

Nine years of Avensis driving so far (one petrol, two diesel) and only once did one fail to start (Battery died near end of warranty period - changed with no quibbles). One or two other very minor niggles only - so a good experence overall and one of the reasons why I went for an Avensis again, despite a wide choice of vehicles including BMW/Audi/Mercedes etc.

Also built in the UK!
