Rear Brake Disk Replacement

Hi guys

Had this like a slaving rubbing noise coming from my rear brakes on my 2001 1.8vvti SR Hatchback...so i had a look at them myself over the weekend...could see the pads were totally worn and disks rusted...And so i had them replaced today...just a quick thought...as i watched the mechanic closely throughout the procedure...i noticed he didnt wipe the disks down at all...saying that the new disks didnt have a like a machine oily surface to it like others i have seen...So does it matter that they didnt wipe them down with whatever chemical people use??? Please let me know.

Im going to be blunt, but the guy is an idiot! New disks come with an oily film to stop them rusting up, I always wipe mine down with thinners or engine cleaner to get the oil off. The surface where the pads and handbreak shoes should be oil free for maximum friction.

Hmmm, let me guess, did you have them done at somewhere like Halfords, Charlie Browns, Quikfit or similar? Like said in the previous reply, discs always have some oily coating on them to stop them rusting, they are after all, made from steel. Always clean off with something solvent, like thinners,carburettor cleaner, methylated spirit etc. (but not turps or white spirit which will leave a residue)

Too late now for yours but they should be ok when the heat from braking burns it off (hopefully)
