Smoke On Heavy Acceleration In My 2.2 Diesel

Hi lads /lasses

1/ My 2.2Avensis runs superbly

on both the motorway and urban roads

the only problem seems to be if I'm just trundling along

and i suddenly want to accelerate rapidly the car will eject a cloud of grey/black

smoke, now i know its a diesel so is this normal and taking into consideration the 101000 mls

on the clock, The car uses no oil or water

2/ Does the Avensis have a FAP filter type arrangement like the French cars to

keep the emissions down on the burnt fuel

3/ Does my 2.2 have the 5Th injector I've read about on this forum if so where is it?

its not readily visible on the top of the engine by the Heater-Glow Plugs

I have had diesels in the past inc a VW T4 but never took too much notice of whats coming out the exhust

My mate says it only does it on the initial acceleration so dont worry its normal its just cleaning out the engine

Thanks i look forward to your replies

Phil

  • 3 weeks later...

well i gave the avensis a good thrashing

and now it seems OK

only smokey when cold

maybe its just because its been run around town

do they have a fap type filter arrangement to keep the emissions low??

The dreaded EGR valve

My daughter had a Megane 1.9 Dci.... fast as hell

but always having trouble with the FAP and EGR valves so in the end Renault wirral took it back

and swapped it for a 1.6 sxi Astra

The sales people said the 1.9dci was not designed for town use and is a fast motorway cruiser

that's why she was having so much aggro with the FAP and EGR valves and she shouldn't have been sold the car without 1st determining its usage

anyway she got a more expensive and lower mileage plus its newer astra as a swap

The issue is not with the bad design

But with over fueling.

surprise surprise

my avensis doesn't smoke heavily now

i sat and reved it to 5000 revs and it seems to have cleaned the smoke away

maybe the AGR valve was choked who knows

but now under heavy acceleration........ no smoke

the smoke is back but not as bad

bearing in mind the car hasnt been on the motorway this week

so it may be a build up in the combustion area of the engine

any way was recommended to use forte diesel cleaner to clean the

injectors etc

so ive bought some from eBay and will ry it when it arrives

will keep you all informed
