4.2 Internittant Oil Light

Hi guys

I have a 2004 XT3 that has done around 3500 miles.

Since I have had it, the oil light on the dash flashes intermittanly, fairly weakly and normally only on idle or at low revs.

Asked my local Mr T. to diagnose fault, and they blamed o2 senors in the exhaust.

Duly had them carry out the work to replace the sensors and problem still occurs.

Any ideas? :help:

ask for your money back.

I'd follow what igor says. Has the car only done 3500 miles????

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies.

Firstly no idea why they pointed me in the wrong direction.

Secondly car has done 35000 miles, not 3500 that was a typo!!!

Thirdly oil levels are fine, but will try to change oil filter and see if that makes a difference.

The engine, once warm idles at 900/1000 rpm

Cheers,

Spawny

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi all

Finally got round to changing the oil and oil filter (after being run ragged at work for the last couple of weeks!!!)

This unfortunately has made no difference to the oil light as it still flashes every now and again. :crybaby:

Any other ideas please?

If you look at the data sheets at the top of the page you will see that the spec is "more than 4.3psi at idle with the engine warm. Now look at this which is a typical switch for a Toyota and you will see it is set at 3-5psi;

http://www.thepartsbin.com/repsite/toyota~oil_pressure_sender~reparts.html

The real test is to install a remore gauge just to check. The probably isn't much wrong.

can it be the wire connector of the sensor slightly loose so making intermitted contact and confusing the ECU? take the connector off and clean it with contact spray. an easy job and doesn't cost a lot (can of contact cleaner) even if it didn't cure it.
