High Pitched Whine From Under The Bonnet

Hi there,

My 06 Aygo has started with a high pitched whine, sounds abit like a turbo, shortly after having a 40,000 mile service. The whining gets louder when I accelerate & is still there on idle. I noticed that the drive belt was rock hard with no give in it, so have loosened this, the noise seemed to lessen at first, but I think it's back to it's previous level.

My air conditioning also now does not work & had done until recently, but the green light just illuminates & I can't hear it, feel it & the drop in RPM doesn't happen when I turn it on.

The car is getting looked at again by the dealer who serviced it on Wednesday, but I'm worried that if they've caused the problem will they fix it?

maybe its the ac pump seized and not rotating and rubbing on the belt? did you get to a dealer?

If you havn't been using the A/C for 10 mins every month, the seals dry out, as there is a lubricant in with the refridgerant;-- lack of use will lead to failure of the compressor;--not cheap to renew. If you are lucky, a new auxillaries belt and tensioner wheel/bearing may stop the noise, once the A/C compressor is sorted (I think there is some kind of clutch to engage the drive).

Thank you to both of the people who have replied.

Took it to the dealer & they said it was the water pump that was squealing.

They said the AC needed re-gassing but they couldn't guarantee that that would solve the problem. This does make me worry that the drive belt has caused a leak. I know it worked until very recently as I always turned it on every month.

Even though I didn't ask them to look at the drive belt it had been loosened since I loosened it.

They have quoted £205 to fit a new water pump & £59 for the regassing.

I've bought a new water pump for £85 & a friend helped me put it in & the noise has gone. Fantastic!

I do still think that it has been caused by the dealer but I expect I wont be able to prove anything.

glad you got it sorted anyway. no idea about the workings of the air con - might be worth a conversation with an ac specialist?

Great to hear you got it sorted out. Would have been great for you to take some pics to show how you chnaged the water pump. Was it hard to change, and did you have to get the car on a ramp to do the work?

Good to see you fixed it yourself! That's a first, normally everyone relies on the dealers. The experience is always good, but like the post above me suggested; would of been nice to make a 'how-to' ;) Maybe next time? :D

You should have been given a free retrospective warranty claim on the water pump, as it has been revised several times. My wife's second Aygo from Jan '59 doesn't have the latest version, which has a thick die-cast alloy base-plate, and a wide bearing for durability. Her first, '55 reg Aygo needed a new pump and radiator, which leaked at the top header-tank.

I am monitoring the present car's water level, and have already got a new radiator cap, which was letting pink coolant dribble down towards the header-tank.

We do have a little bit of "mayo" under the oil-cap, but it is a town car.

I expect to get a new water pump of the latest type free without having to wait for a leak;- we are just waiting for a convenient time to make the 100 mile trip to the dealer.(we have bought 5 Toyotas from this dealer, so I don't expect them to quibble.)
