Time For Upgrade, T180/sr180?

Looking to upgrade my Rav this year (and yes the baby Giant will be going up for sale if anyone is interested) and have been looking at the T180/SR180’s.

Looking over old topics there seem to a few posts on problems with the T180’s from poor mpg, egr valves and injectors however not much on the SR180’s. Im just wondering if any (minor) revisions had been made to engine when the SR180 was introduced – one topic that got me thinking this was that someone had got a different engine and the injectors were different (and so were the part numbers for the injectors – changing at 2007).

Was it 2007 the T180 changed to a SR180 and was there any (other) differences, at all? (ie. inside, trim, equipment).

Im starting to convince myself it may be worth paying a bit more for a SR180 for peace of mind or am I just playing mind games with myself?

I believe it came in mid 2008 as a cost down version of the T180 but with spec packages that allowed it to be revised back up virtually to the T180. The only potential headache are those run flat tyres as the engine benefits from all of the engine oil consumption and sealing mods.

Before you commit, just compare it (test drive both) to a 2009 on XT-R which has the new 150 engine and conventional tyres. The power delivery is monumentally different from the old 136 engine and the emmissions are lower (£150 rfl) and fuel consumption lower to boot. If you dig in you can get a brand new one for £22.5k inc 5 year warranty.

Big Kev has a SR180 if you want a user opinion and he will be driving my XT-R early in May if you want his comparison.

Must admit, I have been reading thouroughly on the "Run Flats" and I am a bit fussy about my tyres too, being restricted to one tyre aint appealing.

Think I would probably look at removing the ring and fitting any tyre I want (and still use the TPMS vlaves too). As for spare, not quite sure yet.

22.5K is maybe a bit much for me at moment, was looking at 15 to 18k.

I might just take you and Big Kev up on the comparison / comments though.

It could be next month or nearer end of the year, the baby Giant runs like a dream (and do enjoy the admiring glances I get), so in no desperate rush to change.

Maybe worth me thinking about a 2007 (around that) XT4 (with leather) or XT5 (still plenty of toys and good trim) then getting it mapped.

I believe the XTR's have run flats too.

Howdo Smiler,

I bought my SR180 just along the road from you in Turriff (Crown Motors....proprietor Albert....utterly A1 seller of cars.)

You should give him a ring and ask him to keep an eye out for suitable Ravs up there in Highlandshire.

If you are ever near here, almost civilisation, PM me first and you can have a wee go at my Kingo chipped version, just due its 10k service in next few weeks.

What's a Baby Giant as a matter of interest?

Good luck in your quest,

Big Kev.

My '08 XTR does not have run flats [thankfully] :) - don't think any did . Mind, it didn't have a spare wheel either

Bought one later for peace of mind

Yep, might just do that cheers for the info. As a point, yours beinga SR180 (as opposed to a T180) am I right in thinking you have had no problems whatsoever?

My "Baby Giant" is my wee (hence "Baby") 3 door Rav 4.1 Giant model, it was a model that was last of the 4.1's, its also made me love the Rav's - and I never thought I would say that while still owning an Impreza turbo.

Didnt know that, I just assumed if no spare wheel on the back door it would have to be "run flats fitted".

Can now add an XTR back on the hit list!

Not one problem thus far, but only 10k miles, 4k of which done by me since purchased 9/09. I-Podificated and Bluetoothified wee while back at Anchorman's ill equipped garage in Derbyshireshire (wonder if he's found all ma dashboard bits yet....)

Trying to convince my mother in law's daughter we should go to Golfview at Nairn as she's off on hols next week....will keep you posted, as that stretch between Nairn / Lossie perfect for "test drives."

Did buy a matching 18" spare, which takes up a nuisance amount of room in boot, but not at all for RFT's....they are coming offsky when tyres done. Otherwise faultless so far......digits interlinked.

If you've still got a Scoobydoo to drive, you will like the Kingo Chip Rav.

Will be in touch,

Big Kev. :D

Hi matey

I have had my 06 T180 for a couple of months now (£15k, 50K miles complete with the extra packages of roof bars, parking sensors, side steps etc etc) and I love it. The engine seemed a bit rattley but after cleaning the EGR valve (ten min job) it seems ok now. I get abut 400 miles on a full tank. The RFTs were a problem for me but I have since bought a new alloy wheel and spare for £140 and if i go on a long trip ill pop it in the boot. When the RFTs need replacing im gonna cut the ring off and pop normal tyres on. Other than the tyres I cant complain abouit the car at all. No problems apart from the rattley engine which seems to have sorted itself now thanks to Ancs telling me about the EGR valve. LOVE IT and glad I bought it

Yep, thats why I was initially looking at the T180 engine, with it tweaked, I think I would be happy to let the Scooby go, at 340bhp and just shy of 400lb ft / 520Nm torque (its tweaked somewhat too) its an experience.

Me and my late Father had a 1967 Mustang Fastback. It had the 390 GT engine (6.4 litre V8) tuned to over 500BHP. Ive got a T180 rav now. now thats a comedown lol but im happy

A chipped T180/SR180 can go from 177 BHP to 212 and from 400 NM torque to 470 NM, very impressive to drive too!

True, torque is the true measurment of the drivability of a car.

After all dont want a Mazda RX8. (hopefully no RX8 owners here  )

Had my T180 from new. Summer 06. I did the looking for a replacement motor last year and after various test drives getting back into the T180 reminded me how good it is. Purchased a Mr T 2 year extended warranty instead. As for the RFT's, in 36K miles, replaced 2 tyres as worn out and 1 puncture. Yes the best part of £90 to fix but the tyre, an original on the rear was still like new. Get and enjoy.

Just been through that myself - £30k budget, test drove quite a few (nice way to spend a Sunday if there's nothing better to do), but couldn't better the T180 in terms of drive/ power/ torque/ mpg/ toys. And just got my wheel bag for my spare yesterday - there's commitment for you. Insurance is up in May - I'll see what Kingo's engine chip adds to the renewal.

Out of intrest what do you charge for chipping a T180 and what affect does this have on fuel economy? Looks like I will finally get the keys to my new car in May :)

No, I dont mind at all. Whichever model il be going for il be contacting you for getting it chipped within days of purchase.

Just reading the paper this morning and with fuel set for another increase, going from a 2.5 petrol turbo to a 2.2 diesel turbo is hopefully going to be easier on the wallet.

Swings and roundabouts - you pay more for a diesel model, but expect better mpg, but price of diesel is more than petrol (not like it was 10 years ago - although I noticed BP Ultimate diesel was slightly cheaper than the Ultimate petrol). So in the long run, I suspect petrol is now the more cost effective option.

Even if a get into the 30's for the mpg out of a 2.2 Rav, its still going to be a lot better (almost double) than 17mpg out my Scooby.

Dont regret having the Scooby, have had it for three years now and been a fun car but think i just need to mature a bit now.

A year ago I could get the Shell Optimax for £1.06, currently at £1.38 at local garage. A few pence more I can cope with but thats a fair difference.
