Hi guys sorry to drag the old head gasket saga up again, To cut a long story short head gasket failure also wasted the block (must have killed a black cat ) not sure of the damage but Gordon Lamb sheffield says it needs a new engine approx 7k they sent a report to toyota for authorisation and it was declined, they have faxed a report to customer relations at toyota in the hope of changing their minds i have also written to them as i find that due to the widespread nature of this problem they have no choice but to repair the car. A two year old car sufering from this problem is unacceptable in anyones eyes 72.000miles for a supposedly top flight diesel is nothing, as for the slating of taxi drivers by toyota i find that too unacceptable as part of any licensing conditions in any part of gb taxis are subject to stringent regular inspections for condition and maintainance over and above that of a normal car, The responsible drivers among us do not rag our vehicle all over the shop as we have to make sure of a good return in the working life of the car normally around 4 to 5 years. If anyone out there can give me an insight as to when this gasket problem came to light i would be very gratefull as i need as much information to continue the battle with toyota if a battle does ensue. Why has Toyota not issued a recall for vehicles with this motor, are the number of incidents to low to issue a recall? What about the thousands of second hand cars out there, have Toyota not got a duty to potential purchasers to make them aware that they may have a seriously expensive problem in the future. I feel i should have been informed when I bought the car as the dealers and toyota were aware of a potential problem then (january 2009) If all else fails have i any re-course to make them buy the car back. So thanks guys for any information whasoever i mean we are the people that maybe affected at sometime.

Hi mate, don't be sorry for dragging this one up again as I for one would like to see it on national TV! It is an absolute disgrace if Toyota don't help you out here, mine was done at 3 yrs old at 40k miles, head gasket, pistons, and crank/conrod shells also fitted all under warranty. In my long experience working with engines I have found generally that ones that were used more often and so kept at normal running temp longer give a lot less trouble, so the fact that you use it as a taxi should help as long as you don't thrash it.

The trouble Toyota have been in just recently with recalls leads me to think that they would not want any more bad press.

I really hope you get sorted out, best regards, Pete.

Hi

Had a similar costing problem a few months ago and the main dealer was unable to fix for less than £3000. I had the car recovered to Feather Diesel in Halifax who are specialists and regularly undertake work that the Toyota guys were unable to complete.

If you cannot get it thru' warranty, my suggestion would be look at this on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2008-TOYOTA-AVENSIS-COROLLA-RAV-4-2-2-D-4D-ENGINE-3K-/140399087746?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20b0701082

I know its not what you want to hear but the car is too good to scrap and would have been my option had Feather not been able to repair the car for a little over £600.

PM me if you need any more info.

Cheers

I have also heard that Feather Diesels are excellent, their website is very good too.

Pete.

Thanks for the reply's fellas but maybe i would once again buying trouble as because of the mileage i do i would need another one in 12 months not a very satifactory solution. Update is that customer relations are now involved and have requested documents for service ect. If I dont get a satisfactory conclusion ie Mr T covering the repairs in total, as Pete suggested you may see me on TV at some stage as at a rough estimate there are at least 10 to 12 Thousand Toyotas of varying models in use in the taxi business a large number of which use the 2.2 d4d whether in 150 or 180 guises and is classed as the number one vehicle of choice in the industry. Letters have been prepared to inform these drivers not in know (so to speak ) through various Private hire magazines and of course motoring magazines to give this problem a national hearing, you never know may get to meet clarkson and team lol, Rest assured i will not let this one get away. I am only one small self employed guy trying to take on the might of a huge company but i feel i am right to do so. My car is tops for my work and i just want it right and maybe if Toyota face up to their commitment to customers they will get to number 1 again as a manufacturer of high quality well engineered an safe vehicles. Rant over have a good day guys.

Good on you mate,

I think you deserve to be treated in a positive way by Toyota UK after all this is a well known problem that needs to given the attention that it needs, after all they designed the engine! The fact that the car is used as a taxi should be more important to Toyota from a sales point of view and they need to get back to the reliability of the Carina E and the pre-vvti Avensis as these are the models their reputation was built on. The fact that taxi owners used them is a testament to all of this.

Regards and good luck, Pete.
