Hey guys, My Aygo is at 15,000 miles now and the front tyres need replacing. I was wondering whether to go to Toyota or an independent garage to get them replaced..

Will Toyota charge a lot more? If so, how much am I looking at?

Thanks

Like do I go to Waitrose or shop around at Asda, Tesco and Morissons and dare I try Farmfoors, Aldi or Lidl?

P.S. Continental ECO Contacts like you have will cost more but really do save fuel (you can buy them in a lot of places), Mitchelin and Bridgestone also do an ECO tyre need to find what they are called. You can usually get a good deal somewhere on a premium tyre. Dont be fobbed of with own brand tyres from the bigger tyre fitters. Dont buy budget tyres but some midrange tyres like Yokohama and Uniroyal are also very good.

I am not sure why you'd like to go to your Dealer in the first instance for something like this. But if you do, make sure you know what you are after and know the best prices around. Then its about negotiation.

I doubt the Dealer will be competitive on single items like this, but if you have access to Costco...thats your best bet IMHO.

try...

www.blackcircles.com

www.camskill.co.uk

then, if you prefer, tell your local what price they need to be competitive with...

id say the same as everyone else on here. Dealer will charge over the top for tyres. Its about your personal choice though and how you drive the car. I dont do much mileage in mine (less than 7000 a year) and im tight as you get. So i actually have got budget tyres on. And i havent had a problem with them at all. It is dependant on your driving style mind. My other car the I30 is a family car and i wouldnt go less than the low range named tyres on that. My SEAT on the other hand has Pirelli on cos i hammer the crap out of it and like pushing it hard. You get what you pay for!

Where did you get a Pirelli for £45? Id love to know where. My budgets cost £37.50 and i shopped around for that price. Thats cheap for that tyre mate, what area are you? Please let us know! :D

Ring round and find lots of diffrent quotes from independant garages, I must admit I have been abit lucky with tyres, when I bought my Aygo i got two new tyres free, then on my cars first MOT it failed on a tyre and i paid £56 for Continental Eco Contact since it was the most expensive, but that because I go for a high quality brand of tyre, not that there is anything wrong with mid range tyres just shop around, it depends largely on your budget and your personal choice at the end of the day all tyres are made out of rubber :P

From Toyota: £48 each for budget or £60 each for premium. All prices are fully fitted; including parts, labour and VAT.

i've had to replace front 2 tyres previously at about 18,000 miles and at that point Toyota dealer was actually the CHEAPEST for the oe fit conti eco's....... i prefer to keep all 4 tyres exactly the same and as the rears were fine i opted for the oe fitment. possibly when the fronts need replaced again the rears will be due as well so i might choose an alternative brand....

What you have to remember is that there is only the tyre between you and the road. A good quality tyre is money well spent, you cannot afford to compromise on safety!!

For what its worth, Premium Tyres usually means Michelin, Continental, Pirelli, or Bridgestone (there are some other premium brands but tend to not produce the same range as the 4 above, maybe like Avon or Vredstein) . Brands such as Yokohama, Hankook are usually thought of as mid range tyres although they may be considered by some as Premium. The big brands all have there budget brand. E.g. Continental and Uniroyal are same company. Uniroyal are good tyres made by Continental but Uniroyal are usually sold little cheaper and they have less ranges than Continental. Think Pirreli also market as Marangoni etc etc, although these are the budget brands of the big companies these are Mid range tyres.

Kwik fit make their own tyres called Centaur, and will often stock a premium brand, a cheap brand and their own brand. They will probably plug their own brand as a cheaper equivilent to a premium brand unless they have a special offer on a premium brand at the time. Well you can decide where Centaur fit in, personnaly I dont buy them. Other big tyre fitters no doubt have thier own ranges too. True budget brands are the ones the tyre fitters cant often remember what they are called usually far east or eastern european brands and usually very cheap. These budget brands are often sold with cheap after market alloys too.

Eco tyres , these are new technology of past 5 years or so. True eco tyres combine grip with low rolling resistance. These tyres contain silica and are Premium tyres. There are only 3 of such tyres I heard about but there are probably a few more. THese tyres save you money on fuel consumption. About 5% fuel consumption claimed and backed up buy nexw car CO2 ratings. Continental Eco Contact 3 , Mitchelin Energy Saver , Bridgestone Ecovia. Best to buy ECO tyres unless you do very low milage like 2500 a year, need specialist tyres for some other raeason. Not all Mitchelin , Bridgestone or Continental tyres that will fit your car are necessaily the same, ie not all ECO tyres. Check if a tyre is a real eco tyre dont buy cos sales person says its as good as an ECO-conti 3 because it probably isnt.

Hey guys I got them done this morning.

£53.19 each at my local garage, including fitting and balancing. Stuck with the Continental Eco Contacts.

Probably a fair bit cheaper than what Toyota would have offered :)

If have Toyota 14" alloys with the steel spare, almost justifies taking the Conti off the steel rim and putting it on the alloy. Trouble is 14" 65 155 is not common size. Fitting cheap as chips on the steel rim that will only ever be very temporary use you may not even save that much on a budget tyre.

You will of course have the new ones put to the rear of the car!

Of course How else would you hope to harness the allmighty power of the Aygo?!

Move the rears to the front, new to the rear.

Right, so you'll always be buying 2 tyres.

Personally I'd rotate tyres about every 6000 miles so they wear at the same rate.

Never get the same deal on 2 tyres as when you buy all 4 ?? B)

Move the rears to the front, new to the rear.

Any decent tyre fitting company would currently advise this practice to prevent the possible rear end breakaway of the car in the case of heavy braking in the wet.
