Yes, all you have to do is open up the unit, reverse engineer the PCB (printed circuit board) - i.e. trace out all the signals and produce yourself a schematic, find out which microcontroller is used (probably something by Renesas), get yourself a compiler for it and re-write all the firmware. :P

Seriously, no, I can't see how they could be used. The B9004 map format I believe is based on specs from the kiwi consortium:

Quite a lot of auto units are based on that. There are various attempts on the web to reverse engineer some of the map dvds. Don't know of any significant progress - haven't looked recently.

The newer hard disk based units are worse. Rather than just upgrading the map DVD, it has to go into a dealer to be done allegedly.
