1995 Rav Alarm Problem

Hi,Have owned 95 rav for 12 years and have had the odd immobilisor problems...I dont think the remotes have been working for some time, allways manually unlock.At the moment car is on drive whatever I do the indicators flash and nothing happens...Engine will not even turn over...My question is can I remove or dissconnect the immobilisor...I really do need the car..The instructions tell me to press red button for 10 seconds then press once this does nothing.

Bothy knows something about doing away with these alarms but at the moment he will be wiring his house up to a street lamp so just wait until he is done and he will advise you.

pure cheek - I did that 5 years ago. the latest project is connecting to the gas mains but B Gas are replacing the old metal pipes with yellow plastic this week so busy having to undo things. Thankfully I have a store of yellow gas mains going from 600mm diameter down to 25mm stuff.

But now to the alarm.

Simply, your alarm/immobiliser has come to the end of its useful life - based on technology dreamt up by what may well be a company which went bust in 1995. 15 years is a long time and I've learnt that these things go mental for various reasons which may include bad connections etc.

The simplest way is to get the immobiliser part removed by bridging the break in the wiring on the ignition so that the immobiliser no longer activates or operates on the ignition circuit. The actual box is strapped to the metalwork just below the radio and below the glovebox. It has lots of black wires running to it from the various sensors.

The easiest way is to strip out the immobiliser.....

unfortunately the way these things were installed was not a factory fit but fitted on entry to the UK> so the method used depends on the guy who installed it. I found that if you trace all the cables, you should be able to trace/follow 2 back towards the wiring loom and fuses on the right side of the drivers footwell.

Basically the wire to the ignition was spliced at that point and the immobiliser added in. You can do a number of things - one of my 1994 RAVs has the whole immobiliser stripped out so only has central key locking. The other has part strip out (ie the ignition bit has been bridged) so the remote still works and the lights flash but it will still start.

The best way and easiest way would be to get an auto-electrician to remove the existing immobilser system and fit a more modern system if you think you need it.

If you want to try it yourself, PM me so I get a reminder to stop drinking and explain how to go about doing it. (and of course my computer only works when the street lights come on)

The original system begins to go daft when the Battery is low on the car but when it gets to that stage its worth ripping the alarm out as trying to rectify it can be a hopeless task.
