Strange Aircon Sound

Hi all, new member here and first post.

I own a 3 door Yaris TR 1.3 58 reg in Decuma Grey. Absolutely brilliant car, never had any problems with it.

Though earlier tonight when driving I switched the aircon on to keep the car demisted, but noticed a strange noise, sounded like a gas leak sort of hissing which went off when I depressed the A/C button again. I also noticed, when freewheeling and also when stationery, the engine never relaxed back to normal idle and did not hear the compressor click off.

I'm hoping it is that the aircon system might need regassing. Least unlike my previous Yaris the aircon works. Its second service is almost due (by mileage terms, it is just under 20,000) so may be in the garage soon.

Anyone got any ideas what it could be? A problem or just that it may need regassing?

There's a pressure switch and if there's a leak, the air con system detects the low pressure and just switches itself off...

You don't hear any different sound if the pressure drops - the pressure's either high enough for the system to function normally or its too low and the compressor just cuts out.

When people say it needs regassing, they mean that the pressure has dropped a little bit - enough to affect efficiency but not enough to stop the system working - but if that happens, you don't hear anything different - its just that the system doesn't get quite as cold as it did when new...

Is the air con actually still working? The gas hissing could be a leak, but if the system is still chilling the air, then its not a leak...

If the air con is still working and chilling the air - then its working OK.

If its not chilling the air at all, then there has been a leak or fault of other sorts so take it in to the garage to get fixed under warranty...

There is a solenoid in the compressor to engage it when you turn it on and to disengage it when idling, etc. Maybe that's sticking, but that doesn't explain the hissing sound....

Hi alfiejts

The air con was still working - still chilling the air and demisting the windows, guess it was just a noise but as I mentioned it is due a service soon so will bring up the issue and see what they come up with. I will go for a little drive today and see if it happens again.

Last time before yesterday I was using the air con in hot weather and could hear the usual sound it makes at speed (from under the bonnet) followed by it clicking on and off at low speed. But as yesterday was cooler and moist I wonder if that may have something to do with it?

Update on my car's condition;

Got the car back following its 20,000 mile service and was told there is a leak in the air conditioning system from the condenser and lower pipe so I need to bring the car back in tomorrow morning and arrange for the use of a courtesy car.

Shouldn't be charging anything on a 58-plate car. Its still under warranty.....

I had a "condenser lower pipe" crack on my Alfa 156 when it was just out of warranty.

A local mobile aircon specialist came over and put dye into the system to diagnose the leak and showed me the part that was cracked.

Cost me £30 for the part from the dealers, which I fitted myself and then he came back and tested and represurised the system. He charged me £50 for his diagnosis & costs for the two visits incl repressurising the system afterwards.

Haven't been on for over a week, back now.

The car was indeed under warranty and was fixed in a few hours. Lower pipe and condenser replaced. During that time I took out a courtesy car to play with (a 1 litre 59 reg Yaris TR - though they called it a T2 but it had the TR accessories; alloys, silver/white door handles, air con and analogue instrument panel, backlit in amber) which I enjoyed. Thats the 7th new shape Yaris I've driven now since 2007.

Anyway full praise to Minories Durham, the car was sorted within four days of the problem first coming to my attention.

However there was an issue I've been monitoring for sometime on my alloys; paint/surface was blistering on three of the wheels. They were replaced under warranty so the car is absolutely fine again. Just notched up 20,000 miles last week now and all is well for Decuma (as I named it).
