Avensis D4-D T180 Egr Valve Clean

It's involved taking fair few big off the avensis to get the egr valve. I would t take not off completely as there's rubber fluid lines that are pressurised attached.

Also the black plastic rail that goes across covers the bolt that needs removing to access the manifold. This is hard to get to. You'll need to undo another bolt that hold the black rail in place to tease it out the way to access the bolt.

Too too really is to not drop a bolt. Use cardboard or foil or something as a tray to catch then as y probably drop one especially when undoing the pipe.

It's simple to do this but you'll think you've done then find another thing to undo! I have an auris I did my next door neighbours avensis. It helped having an extra pair of hands.

Good luck and feel free to ask if you get stuck.

That's Rubbish lol. The turbo spool might be slow. But why... There's a reason. Possible sticking EGR valve.

Cheers guys. Will let u know tomorrow. The pics i posted was an old part, mines still stuck on, Havent been able to take off 1 stubborn bolt. Its getting too dark now, will try again tomorrow with some WD40. Ruined my ratchet set, my own fault for buying from halfords. Buy cheap buy twice.

Here's a good tip ..... always take the most awkward bolt/nut out first on any job otherwise when you take the easy ones out first (and that's human nature) the awkward one is even tighter  ;) .

Yep have to agree pete. I took off the bottom bolt first. I got stuck on one of the easy to reach ones. Worst thing is that i have nearly ruined the bolt. I hope it comes off tomorrow. Fingers crossed

If the bolt is a bit rough use an 8-sided socket rather than the standard multi-facetted one. The standard ones slip easy on worn heads, the 8-sided ones stay on - especially if you have to 'help' them on with a hammer....

I will try the eight sided one. Hope it works. The bolt is nearly bold, almost round. Fingers crossed

Another update. Have cleaned the egr and replaced. It wasnt that dirty and hasnt made any difference. I took off the mass air flow sensor, connected to the air filter, looks old and corroded. Should i replace it? Or can i try spraying it with some electrical contact cleaner as a cheaper first option? Also whats the price on a new one?

The fault codes were

P0108 manifold absolute pressure/ barometric pressure something.

P1251 turbo regulator.

The problem is now the car is flat powerwise. Struggles to go past 40, takes a lifetime to get to 60 even after dropping gears. Have ordered bg244. What do i do now? Where do i start?

I seem to remember that the fault codes need deleting otherwise the car thinks the fault is still there. Also might be worth getting a specialist to check it over.

Deleted the fault codes, engine management light went off then came back on 10 mins later. Want to try and fix it myself or at least rule out a few problems before i try a specialist. Im trying to find "king pete" on this forum, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Do you want Parts King to buy stuff from or T-Spirit Pete for advice and diagrams? You can PM them.

Have just came back from a turbo specialist. His machine came back with four fault codes. He said that they are all related, replace the turbo as it is the main problem, other codes will right themselves.

Codes are as follows:

P0102 MAF Circuit low input fault

P0108 MAP/BARO pressure circuit high input

P0113 Intake air temp circuit high input

P1251 Turbo/Supercharger overboost condition too high.

Any thoughts guys? Thanks

What mileage is you car?

If you DPF (Diesel Particulate Firter) or Cat are pretty much clogged up I believe you can get all the above fault codes at some point or other. I was told and when you think about it it is pretty much logical that the above creates a sort of back pressure and unless you check and make sure those are OK, you can end up with unnecessary repairs of Turbo, MAF, etc.

Cheers kashbg. Mileage is 160,000.

Havent checked the dpf or cat. If anyone can give links to guides or diagrams please? Also how difficult are they to do? Can i do it myself? Or take it to a local mechanic? My turbo specialist quoted £600 supply and fit turbo with 12 month warranty. He did say he will clean out the cat at the same time. Any thoughts guys?

I believe the DPF is quoted with expected life of around 90k give or take depending of driving habits. To buy those it is quite expensive. I am not advocating the following but some people gut their Cat or DPF at least temporary until their budget gets better. I personally believe, but can not prove it with facts, that both the DPF or CAT can be cleaned with acid if taken down and soaked overnight. I have been meaning to try doing this myself for some time, but taking down the above renders the car un-drivable until you fit them back on or temporary fit a straight pipe. I personally would not consider gutting the DPF or the CAT.

Just get it terracleaned. It's £80 and cleans everything including cat, oxy sensor, dpf and egr valve.

YouTube terraclean.

Can I add a tip for cleaning the egr valve on your avensis? After you have scraped the worst of the carbon out with a screwdriver blade or similar, try Mr Muscle spray oven cleaner. This is wicked stuff and will burn your hands so use rubber gloves. But it works like a charm in about 10 minutes . Of course, your wife will kill you when she finds out!

Please help....Driving an Avensisi T180

So I have had this problem where the ERG valve has sooted up I have taken it off and cleaned it and put it back with no results....still low power until 2100 revs then the car runs perfect..

So I took off the ERG valve again and made a blanking plate...

Perfect ...for 5 mins then all my Engine warning lights came on and the car went into limp mode

Turned off the engine and restarted ( lights still on ) and continued to drive no limp home mode..5 mins later car went into limp mode....again turned off engine and re-started car drove correctly but with all engine warning lights on....

What have I done wrong as reading all the Toyota Blogs they say just blank it off and you will have no problems ...
