Replacing Immobilizer And Cylinder Lock

On my Corolla XLi 97' hatchback the cylinder lock broke and I could only order a complete set with a new cylinder, keys and an immobilizer unit/ecu.

After it's been replaced the Toyota dealer said I had to come back to have them "program" it.

Is this "programming" something I can do myself or is it a "dealer only" thing that requires special tools/software?

Found a link on how to replace it on a Prius, but I don't know if it applies in my case; though I'm suspicious since the dealer told me it took ~30 minutes to do the "programming" - which is the same amount of time it took in the linked article.

I personally would feel much more assured with regards to the safety of my car if the dealer did it themselves.

I'd take the conservative route on this and let them do it rather than risking making a hash of it yourself.

I'll replace the components myself since it would cost me a lot to let them do it, but since it's so hard coming up with any usable information on anything regarding the "programming" part I guess that part will be done by the dealer; unless by any chance there's an easy way to do it myself, which I'm starting to doubt ...

Put the hardware in yourself but let them handle the software.

People just don't do that sort of thing here.

Was hoping I could just close the door a couple of times, while pressing the brake pedal
