Clutch Faulty?

Hi

I have found this forum so useful since inheriting a well looked after avensis 2.0 t4 d-4d with high mileage.

It did over 100k on original clutch so i believe. Yet in 30k on new clutch & flywheel fitted last august it has given me the slip in the last week.

It is very intermittent and i have tried beingon the flat and putting in high gear then engaging and it stalls?!?! Which eveywhere seems to point to not a clutch problem. A handfull of times when moving upto 4/5 gear I hit the accelerator and the revs shoot up as if clutch is down, only for a very short time, maybe a second then it picks the drive up.

I have tried all day today to look out for it and it hasn't occured at all even with hard accelleration. Could it be something very simple and if a new clutch is required would anyone recommend the conversion from DMF to single Flywheel????

please help.

:-)

Hi mate, it maybe that the clutch slave cylinder or release arm is sticking when you let the pedal up. This would be the cheapest option start with, if the clutch is knackered remember that a non DMF setup will be very harsh on the gearbox with a diesel engine due to the high available torque at very low revs.

Best of luck and keep us informed with the outcome and I hope it doesn't cost you too much,

Thanks for the info pete. Also excuse my ignorance as my knowledge is limited but is the slave or release arm done or checked as part of a clutch change?

Hello again, the hydraulic slave or master cylinder would not normally be changed unless a fault was suspected but the clutch release arm which is pushed by the slave cylinder to operate the release bearing (which is changed) to disengage the clutch assembly would be inspected but rarely give trouble anyway.

It sounds like the hydraulic side to me but the release bearing can also stick on the shaft it slides on, if you could explain this to a reliable local garage man he may shed some more light on the problem and suggest a fix that won't break the bank.;)

Best regards Pete.

thanks pete

apologies for delay but it took me ages to find the post again!!!! why cant you search by keyword on the forums????

anyway i was put in touch with a small independant clutch specialist by a friend. turns out clutch plate was burnt out but it seems that previous garage hadnt changed the clutch cover during previous change so a cheap clutch plate and luk cover on vehicle. so not a good match. he also said the flywheel was fine yet didnt look like it had only been on 11 months!!!!!! makes me wonder about previous garage and the 1100 quid spent by previous owner which i have the invoice for!!! needless to say i shall never be using that garage!!!!

clutch replaced working fine now and all for 250 !!!

Hi dj,

Yeah, it sounds like the previous garage pulled a quick one!!. All parts of a clutch are matched in the factory. Hence, a part from one clutch can't be mixed with a part from another clutch...for example, using a flywheel from another clutch. £1,100 sounds a bit steep too for changing a clutch.

Would advise you to stay away from the previous garage you mentioned.

Exactly same problem with my 04 d4d T-Spirit. I was gonna write for help suddenly then I stumbled on this thread. Guess I know now what to do. Thanks a lot for sharing this.

you are totally right £1.100 is totally over the top, my local toyota dealer quoted me £600 for original toyota clutch, of course i think that over the top too, i got myself( Quinton Hazell Automotive Limited ) they even give lifetime warranty on their cluches, for personal use only and as long as you own it. and i managed to get it brand new for £73 delivered, +£130 mechanics cost to fit it, got it in toi be done today, if this works i would recommend it to everyone. When its done i'l update you.
