hi,i have bought a 1999 rav 4 2.0l from eBay, it has a broken cambelt, just wondering if all the valves have bent or if they will be ok.

it may of been a foolish buy? but for £400 i thought i would take a chance.

i have been told they do both, could someone who is in the know tell me which is right. thanks david

If you look in the timing belt info pinned at the top of the page you will see that that is an "interferance" engine. You might tell if you take the cam cover off and carefully turn the pistons back to 90 deg before TDC. Then turn the cam and see if the valves all appear to return to closed. If they do you can try a new belt. If they don't it might be easier to put new head on it.

Either way its not the end of the world at that price.

Good luck.

i have changed two broken cam belts on this engine both were fine as long as it hasn't been turned over to push the valves out full extent check the water pump for leaks and play, and the oil pump for the same if all ok check the idler and tensioner and put a belt on should fire up

hi, the man who delivered the car said he had cranked the engine a few times to check if the belt had gone.

i have managed to buy a replacement engine that runs ok. it has only done 54,000 miles for £150 so will fit it soon.
