Tyre Wear

Hi.. My wife has a Yaris 1.3 vvt- (08) she's a carefull driver (drives like a tallycam's on each cnr)

The front tyres have worn less than 2mm on edges, evenly on both sides of each tyre, the centre has at least 6mm only 10500 miles.

her other yaris did over 20k.

The tyres are Yokohama 185/15 r15 h

Any others had questionable tyre wear like this?

Sadly the service @9,700mile did note that the r/h/f tyre trad was amber with2mm on edge.

The tracking was down as checked with no action.. I am not pleased they did not tell us verbally that there was a tyre problem when we collected car in march 2010... all that paperwork duhhhh...

any thoughts appreciated.

John..

Sounds like you need the tracking doing. I got mine done at my local National Tyres branch and also had the car "4 wheel aligned" to make sure it's set up perfect.

All the tyre wear is even on mine now, think it cost about £40 but cheaper than keep buying new tyres!

X2 if you have uneven tyre wear you have only a few possible problems; Tracking, Alignment or incorrect inflation.

"The front tyres have worn less than 2mm on edges, evenly on both sides of each tyre, the centre has at least 6mm only 10500 miles"..

Inflation problem.. Bet the tre pressures are never checked and are far too low.. The above are the classic symptons.

If overinflated the centre would have worn more...

(As my wife never checks anything on her car, I do... ) :-(

Easy test: When were they last checked?

And what are the pressures now?

Thanks for replies..

Yeah my wife still dont know how to lift the bonnet hood..

Thing is the service tick off list showed that tracking was checked (koffs) and pressure checked (koff koff)) and also there was a remark that one tyre (ticked in amber box) was worn to 2mm at the edges. So it seems if tracking and pressures were checked and ok why has tyre /s worn so quickly @10500.miles?

I would have thought this being a major safety issue it would have been verbally pointed out.

luckily wife has only done 1,000miles since the service which was in march 2010. To think I replied to toyota hq and got a m&s voucher saying what good service I had from them .(acellerator pedal recall) when I was blissfully unaware that they sent my wife on her way with tyres which were almost illegal ..tut...

Rant not over yet ;)

Take the car to a reputable small garage that deals with tyres and does tracking. Ask them to check the tyre pressure, to balance all four tyres and have the front tracked (I've been told that if a car is front wheel drive no point doing the rear). If that fails you may want to get a decent more widely known brand of tyres such as Continental, Dunlop, GoodYear, Pirelli, Michelin... I've got GoodYears on mine and they've lasted me ages and are really good!

I had my front tyres balanced and tracked yesterday and the car is much happier now :D.

It's unlikely the dealership did a full tracking and alignment on your car. I doubt they have the latest laser tracking machines that specialist tyre places have.

My mate had the mechs at Honda check his Civic for tracking once, they ticked all the boxes and told him everything was ok but the car was still pulling to the left and scrubing the tyres up.

I told him to take it where i go to National Tyres, and they did the job properly as it was miles out of track.

When my mate told them that Honda had checked the tracking, they just replied with a "No comment" sarcastic remark and told him that dealership can't do proper tracking like the machines can that they have.

I have had issues with dealerships about silly things like tyres and i just think they don't even bother checking them anyway.

Allways best to get the tracking and alignment done at the proper places.

  • 4 weeks later...

I am running on Dunlop Sports (standard manufacturer fit) and have 6mm depth in front and 7mm in rear. I've done 3,500 miles so far and am checking the pressure every month or so. I also try not to turn the steering wheel without wheels being in motion whilst parking or similar manouvers that can wear the rubber extensively. It seems to do the job as they are in perfect condition. Maybe japanese rubber have softer compound than Dunlops.

But as the colleagues say if they are worn on the side, it is definately underinflation.

I walk around the town or on my way to work and do little insepction on other cars' tires. I can't believe how many are visibly (which is an extreme case of underinflation) underinflated, especially low profile tires. Not many drivers care to check this regularly.

I used ATS for 4 wheel tracking - highly recommended. (they informed me that KFit who did th tarcking in March had it wrong - and showed me...

on the mirrors. No wonder one front tyre was worn.

4 New Michelins - with 25% special deal.. I should get 40K miles from them - I hope..

About 12 years ago (!) I bought a Michelin twin barrel foot pump - very accurate guage. makes checking pressures and adjusting them v easy.

Bare in mind, the LEGAL requirement is a min of 1.6mm across the CENTRAL three quarters (75%) of the tyres, and the whole circumference so yours MAY be legal for quite some time yet, if you sort the underlying wear rate problem...

As a very limited fix, set the tyre pressures to the higher, fully loaded pressure. this will wear the centres more than the sides but under no circumstances should you put even more in as this will ***** the handling of the vehicle! :ffs:

As an aside... Lower profile, wider tyres WILL wear out faster than (And cause heavier steering) Over standard tyres. :censor:

Have heard so many times about dealers, not only Toyota, saying they have checked this that & the other, only to find out later it hasn't been done.

A neighbour bought a VW Beetle recently and it was supposed to have been serviced etc. when they checked the oil, screen wash etc a month later, they found the oil level below the min, and it was black. Only done 500 miles, so it should have still been quite clean, and full if it had been changed.
