How Hardwearing Is Your Interior Trim

Picked up my May 2009 Gen 2 Prius yesterday and surprised to see how worn the "furry felty" bits of interior trim are where the driver's and front passenger's arms have rested on the door and centre console. The car has only done 14000 miles (I suspect in it's first 12 months of use)and it's a T Spirit.

Am I just unlucky or is this typical?

Has all the budget on the car gone into the engineering and cost cutting on the interior?

Or perhaps the previous owner wore high friction clothing :yahoo:

Any high mileage guys like to comment (like taxi owners) ?

Cheers

My jury is still out on this one! At first I thought the trim looked cheap and wouldn't last, but after 28k miles of use it seems to be holding up well. It's still early days and I do have some concern about the edge of the drivers seat. I also have concern about the center arm rest and drivers door arm rest trim though. I have a feeling they will need to be replaced sometime before 100k.

hi grumpy cabbie (again)

as your seats get plenty of ues and getting in and out to assist your customers must etc,the seat have a hard life.

for many years ive used seat covers (good quality),it not only protects the seats from staining and wear and tear but when selling a car the seat are in prestine condition and give good impression when removed.

The problem is getting good quality seat covers that actually fit. If you know where I can get some for a gen3 Prius that don't look too tacky and 'mini cab' then let me know

cheers

hi grumpy cabbie,

i purchased my seat covers at snetterton sunday market (near race track)but this does not help you.

i was so impressed with them i went back the following sunday and got a second pair.

they are CP SEAT COVERS called the kensington range, the no address on the pack (fronts only) nor phone number.

so have been on line and found ROCKSHORE supplies them.so try www.rockshore.uk.com.

their web page shows only a sports type seat covers but am sure the will advise you on the rest of their range.

they come in a choice of colours.hope this of some help.

peter.

Thanks for this. I will keep an eye on them and may ask at the dealer about replacement - rather surprised that they are not more resilient!

I thought that the Gen 3 had driver and front passenger seat side air bags fitted to the seats.

If that is the case front seat covers may interfere with the deployment of the air bags!!

My old Gen II is still in the family. 28 months 70,000 miles. No noticeable wear.

Certainly the gen 2 does and Mr T recommends that seat covers are NOT used, also on the rear seats as there is a Battery ventilation vent on the offside of the rear seats!!!

Yes, use seat covers here, unless they completely clear the vent, will kill the traction Battery in no time flat.

hi

i was only talking about front seat covers for grumpy cabbies car. only ever fit front ones myself.i dont think rear seat covers would be advisable in a taxi anyway.

the material of the covers i have is of a thick material(far thicker than toyota fits to the seats on my auris.)

but this is only on the seat cushion and back rest, the back of the seat (that faces rear) and the side of the seat cushion is of a lot lighter material.and was advised should air bag deploy it would not interfere with its protection. mind you thats when i had them in my mondeo.the mondeo had heated seats and electric adjustment so there was a load of wiring under the seat,so when fitting the covers care had to be taken where elastic ties and hooks were fitted, but thats common sense.fitting can be fiddly as the covers have to be to tight or they will crease up.on the mondeo once fitted it did not look there were covers fitted so good was the fit.

not as good on the auris but perfectly exeptable.

I'd go for the leather option from the dealers but I really can't bring myself to pay a grand for it!

Does anyone here work for a dealer and can get us a gen3 Prius leather interior for cost?

(You don't get if you don't ask)

i beleave the are firms that specialise in recovering seats and also will fit leather

bet they would be cheaper than toyota and more than likly better to.

saw a jag at car rally that had new leather seat, looked terrific.not one crease in the leather that you see sometimes.

My Gen 2 has leather upholstery I would not have anything else. It looks good and does not have any sign of wear after 3 years.

It's one extra I always spec on a new car, regardless of cost.

Yep I had leather and electric seats with 2 memory positions, even heated seats for driver and front passenger, on my last car but buying an 09 to save several thousand I had to go with what was available

Still at least my vegan mate will also be pleased with my choice

The profit in a leather kit from Toyota would'nt pay for a pint and a packet of !Removed!!

You would also need to have it professionally fitted at a trimmers too, its not like fitting a seat cover, it requires a lot of work

Kingo
