Hi, Guys!

I've changed today the intake shutter assy as it has been suggested by Toyota on my second visit- brand new. I started the car- works, no light. Tryed to accelerate and the car does not wanted to go on more than 3800 rev's and it was a slow acceleration. Checked the shatter after switch the engine off, it was ok. Started the engine again, still the same but the light came back on. Does anybody know when you put a new intake shutter if it needs time to adjust or it needs aditional adjustment afterwards or it looks like Mr T suggested me to buy and change another wrong part?

Any suggestions?

P.s. The Battery has been disconnected during the change so I presume the ECU has been reset.

Hi, A1!

I fit a brand new EGR valve about a month and a half ago after I have been told( the code has been read 6 times and it was the same) it is the EGR valve- still the car goes on limp mode and the EML on. After I have been twice to Toyota and they insisted it is the throttle switch( intake shutter) I changed it inspite after I put the new( second hand) engine the throttle body has been changed- the one from the other engine and as the Mechanic said it is very unlikely to have two throttle bodies with the same code error. Now this is the third one and the car become even worse- max speed 30 miles and 3400 revs, almost stops when you go uphill.

Before when the engine was reaching normal working temperature I used to switch it off for 5 seconds and back on again. The light still on but the car drives normal, not on limp mode. Now nothing like that anymore with the brand new intake shutter.

palmerino,

your issue has been going on far too long time ...

this is how it works you goto toyota tell them the symptoms, they do diagnostics tell you this needs doing etc etc

they fit part for you to fix problem,if you still have issues with the car it is now toyota's problem they need to make it work at no extra cost.

this is the promise i get from toyota before taking the car with a fault , long as all work is done at toyota

hope this helps

Happy New Year to everyone!

...which probably my Toyota dealer does not really do. They keep pointing and asking me to change the same parts which have been changed already- the whole engine plus the surrounding parts so I presume when they test the cat for foults they should exclude those ones which have been replaced already. It is something else, thats why I have got 2-3 sets of every part connected with the P0488 code. I am taking the car on Monday or Tuesday to Mr T and leave it there to deal with it.

I sympathise with you position as I was in a similar state myself a while ago - but with much older cars and neither of them Toyotas. They were the reason I bought a Toyota though: less time fixing, more time driving.

I think it is time for a reality check - your 'budget' approach to maintenance is not saving you any money. It was unfortunate that you had to change the engine. Fitting a second hand engine is an economic way of doing it but swapping second hand/used components between the engines is not the way to achieve reliability - especially if you don't have the support of a specialist or dealership. You state that you have already invested/spent £4000 on the car this year and it still isn't fixed. I suspect that if you went to Toyota in the first place they could have sourced a second hand engine, fitted it and solved your problem for much less.

I think it is time to let the experts solve your problems. Yes it will cost you but, hey, you have invested heavily in this car already. Spend a bit more cash to get it fixed and enjoy driving it. Oh, and get the complicated jobs done by the specialists. They are specialists because its comlicated - that's why they exist. Your dealership has already done the diagnosis free of charge, let them finish the job. They want your car fixed as much as you do. Bad cars = bad publicity and they don't want that.

I really hope your car is fixed soon.

Best wishes

Thanks!

I am taking the car on the first working day to Toyota and as I said I will leave it there until fixed. Probably I will sell it afterwards but I want it done first.

I doubt you will get your money back if you sell it. Wouldn't it be better to keep hold of it and that way you know that you have fixed your problems? If you buy another car it may come with its own set of problems. Just a thought but if it was me, I would want to see a return on the money invested.

Hi, everybody!

Just a quick update. Third time to Toyota third set of EGR valve and intake shutter- this time brand new ones changed by me after they(Mr T) said it is 100% the intake shutter and ignoring the suggestion from the mechanic who replaced the engine that it could be a wiring problem.

A woman took the car this time after the previous guy said to me : ''The problem is that we have done everything we could''. OK fair enough. After 3 days in the garage they found a broken wire and pin- £315 job done.

I am just wondering why they did not do it on the first place and save me this £1000 which I spent for numerous code readings, cleaning and buying parts which I did not need( I presume)?

I am really glad you got your car fixed at last. What a shame that you have had so much trouble. I hate trying to find and fix electrical faults, they are a real pain in the backside. Hopefully now you can enjoy a good long time of trouble free motoring. All the best.

I had the same problem with my car, went to local guy with software and the code was for ERG valve but upon further investigation it was the 5th injector that was not working, Toyota wanted 850 euro for a new one but I got one for 40 euro from Hong Kong, fitted it and got same guy to check ECU and everything fine since.
