Trc/vsc/engine Light On T180

Hi guys,

Just reading through these comments I get the impression that a bit of regular motorway driving is enough to keep the EGR valve in good knick. I've got a 2007 D4D and admittedly have previously spent a bit too much in an urban setting (slow traffic, low revs etc). I'm guessing this isn't ideal for a 2.2L engine, though I am now working in a location that means a daily 15 min motorway session @ 2,000RPM in 6th. My question is:

If high revs help keep the EGR valve clean, would you recommend dropping a gear and travelling in a lower gear than idle every now & again? For example spending a few mins driving in 3rd gear rather than 5th and keeping the revs at 2,500RPM and above? This would generally be around 15-20 minutes after the engine has been started (so on a warm engine) or would it be best just doing this on a cold engine?

Or perhaps it actually has to be motorway? Though on the motorway I'm usually at 2,000RPM on 6th gear as the car has a lot more to give than the 70-80MPH demanded!

Today my TRC (Traction Control), VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) & Engine management lights all came on together and have stayed on.

Any ideas what usually causes this to happen ? I'm guessing its some sort of wheel sensor issue ?

It happened to me about 6 months ago but the lights all went out and stayed out for 6 months.

Car is a 2.2 D4-D T180 2006 - still drives well with the lights on but clearly my TSC & VSC are not working and I have not turned my traction control off.

I had a similar problem. In my case it turned out to be a clogged DPF pipe. If under warranty, Toyota will fix this by replacing the CAT. If not under warranty, a new CAT is expensive. Fortunately for me, there is a simple fix described somewhere in this forum that worked for me. The fix involves blowing air down a hose with a compressor. That did it for me and the lights never came on after that. I also cleaned the EGR valve, which might have helped.

Can you give me the link please for the fix. I think I have this fault. Car feels very sluggish

I had this a couple of years ago. I got the fault code read, did some Googling and this led me to a Toyota service bulletin explaining that when my particular fault code and lights were showing, the solution was to change the glow plugs (of all things!). As the car was starting fine from cold, I concluded that one of the glow plugs was simply out of tolerance for the ECU to accept, and was flagging up the errors. So I bought one new glow plug, and started to replace each plug one by one until the lights stopped appearing. I was lucky that this happened when I replaced the first glow plug and this completely solved the problem. I had the VSC system reset by a garage, and it's been fine since, 3 yrs and 70k miles. I've attached the service bulletin for you to check your codes against once you have got them read. Hope this helps.

Hi.

My T180 2006 model gave Its first sign of trouble today on my way home.

Nicely warmed up engine, going well as usual when I realised it was down on power, checked dashboard and behold!

We had VSC, TRC and Engine check lamps all on together. Struggled up hills, seemingly in limp home mode.

Struggled to top 40 mph.

This car has been brilliant, taking lots of hard driving and has now done over 96,000 miles WITHOUT any previous problems other than a dead Battery one day, really, no other problems at all.

So I will drive to the closest garage I trust for a check, test and diagnosis.

Will post results as soon as I can.

Looks like I'll have to get the Lambretta 225 out to get to work ! ;-)

I think they're right to say dpf goes faulty in you rarely drive the car or do allot of town driving, (both apply to me). I was stuck in traffic for a very long time . however still ok. When I was getting onto a roundabout, my power suddenly went no matter how much I put the throttle down. (Very scary, as I was joining the roundabout with cars coming). the lights came on a short while after.

Initially after that the acceleration was ok for the first 20mph. but acceleration after that was very slow. Taking ages to get to 40 on a dual carriage way.

Recently I have put two bottles of fuel additive (DPF cleaner (Forte)), and I can see the acceleration getting better however the lights are sill on.

My cars a 2006 t180 and just done 111,50 miles. U reckon they'l accept the extended warranty. My cars got FSH for Toyota except for last 2 years, which were done by Kwik fit. Got receipt but not stamped into book)

Take it into the main dealer asap! You'll be fine... The best stuff ro use is BG244 or Archoil products after you've had a new engine...

Hi Again.

Dropped the car into (trusted) local garage this morning.

They called me later to say the fault codes pointed to fault with EGR valve (no surprises then).

They had taken a quick look at it and said it was particularly bad, they could not see an 8mm orifice they knew was there! :-(

So they want to remove the inlet manifold assembly to do a thorough and carefull decarbonise job and put it back together.

They didn't want to risk any lumps of carbon going inside the inlet manifold inspite of my suggestion of a vacuum cleaner!

These guys have seen all this before so I'm confident of their abilities.

I will have to wait until Wednesday to get my car back.

Meanwhile I'm using my wife's Yaris 1 litre car, boy are these things slow!

At 40 mph in top gear it's doing 2000 rpm, at 70 mph it's at 4000 rpm and yes I did keep checking I was in top gear - infact I keep trying to change into 6 th gear but there isn't one.

Can't wait to get my T180 back !!!

Hi

Got my car back after the garage had removed and decarbonised the whole inlet manifold :dontgetit: .

I saw the photos they took and it was very badly choked up so how you guys get a good result just cleaning the EGR valve I don't know.

Car feels much livelier to drive and more responsive to a light throttle, top end pull and acceleration for overtaking is really good now.

They suggested in future to periodically drive in say 2nd gear and rev to the rev limiter for a few seconds, ease off and do it again and see what comes out of the exhaust system!! :ermm:

Cheers

Scooter Boy

What do i do?

I purchased a 57 T180 2.2D4D-Cat in april 2013. The car was perfect until Oct 2013 when the VSC and TRC and engine management symbols all lit up on the dash. I took it to the dealer where i purchased it(not a toyota dealer) and they reset the error and i got the car back. 10 days later and again the lights came on but this time i drove the car cold about 200 yards and it was like the accellerator was not responding to being pushed, i turned the engine off and back on after 30 seconds and the lights remained on but now the car drove fine. Took it back to the dealer where i purchased it and they contacted a toyota dealership. The Toyota dealership said that they have had an issue relating to the fault code and it would be best if the car could be taken to them so they could put it onto their diagnositcs. Their diagnostics said that the error logged was low fuel pressure, and they advised that the speed controller to the fuel pump and the fuel pump ECU had to be replaced. The garage i purchased the car from said the bill would be £500 and the garage i purchased it from said they would pay half of the money so i payed £250 and got the car back. I then drove the car for two days and same dash lights so back to the garage i purchased from and they sent it back to the Toyota dealership. The toyota dealership then replaced the fuel pump-speed controller again and also replaced the fuel filter. I got the car back eventually and two more days and same dash lights again, so back to garage i purchased from, eventually they got it back to toyota and this time they said new fuel pump (Quoted - £2500). After speaking with the garage i purchased from, eventually they spoke to extended warranty company(not toyota warranty) and they agreed to supply toyota with new fuel pump and covered labour. Got the car back again and it drove home fine, got into the car in the morning and drove 100yards down the road and the car shut down to idle(not responding to the accellerator pedal again), nursed the car back to my house on idle and sat in it and tried to get the accellerator pedal to respond and the car just died this time. Its now at toyota again and the dealer i purchased the car from has advised that toyota have taken a same model car off of their forecourt and are swapping the bits between the engines to try and identify the fault. I think i have driven the car about 200 miles in the last 3 months as it seems they are unable to identify the fault.

Can anyone give any advise that might help me????

What faulty code have your car on the tester? Mine have the p2002 fault code, have the same simptoms like your car, but the problem is the Diesel Particulate Filter.

Try to find out what fault code does your car have.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have recently bought an '06, 2.2 D4D tourer from my brother in law with 102k, and a week later the three lights are on, and my code reader throws up the P0400 code.

Now I'm thinking ahead here, but if a good clean of the EGR fails to solve the problem, will i get any joy from approaching Mr T under the silent extended warranty, seeing as that PDF states cars up to 111k or 7yrs, whichever is sooner?

I wouldnt have thought so as the car is over the 7 year limit being an 06 plate. Has the car got full history?

It does, but from an independent garage he has always used. I don't think it has any servicing done by Toyota. I guess I'll just have to suck it up then!

Hi

I seem to have a similar problem. VSC, TRC OFF and Engine light all came on when starting a car today. Its 2007 2.2 150hp, so no CAT filter. Car drives normally, brake lights working. No coolant and oil levels normal, no smoke etc...

What could it be? The thing is im aboit 100km away fro. Toyota deler, is the car safe to drive that long?

I bought my car (Verso T180 56 plate) 2nd hand Dec 2013 it had 85k on the clock and a full service history, from day one though i was only averaging 30mpg!!! My last diesel Peugeot 407 was going over 50mpg. Anyway after 6 months of owning I had the exact same problem as all of you have stated above the 3 lights came on so added some engine additive as Toyota wanted almost £80 just to look at it. The lights stayed on but the car still drove ok, then over the next few weeks the acceleration was getting more and more sluggish until it got to the point the car would hardly move! Anyway took it to my local independent whole specialise in Toyota. They said it was the egr etc so they cleaned it up and also Terra Cleaned the system as well. When I picked it up the car felt like new, also my mpg rose up to about 43mpg, I was really pleased.

Until today, the 3 lights have come back on, I have no other systems, over the last few months I have noticed the mpg has dropped slightly but that’s it. Anyway phoned the garage who sorted it the last time and they’re taking a look at it this afternoon. Think it’s time to get a car that’s got a better built engine and the mpg is well over 50mpg as its crippling me running this as my return trip to work every day is 134 miles!

I’ll update when I find out what the garage says later :-/

Sorry to dig up a bread from the dead.

This is very pertinent to me at the moment. I bought a 57 Reg avensis D4D T180 with 148,000 on the clock yesterday. The car was fantastic until late yesterday evening when I tried to pull away after warm idle for about 3 mins. When I pulled away I had no power, struggled to get to 40 mph. The VSC/TRC OFF /EML lights were all on. I stopped after about 1/4 of a mile and turned the car off and on again. The lights remained but the power returned. I have read several threads on this topic on the forum. So far the only check I have done on the car is that the brake lights are all working fine. There is the possibly that one of the front tyre pressures is slightly low (will check at a garage later) but the car has matching tyres on each axle. I have yet to do a search for a 'how to guide' on EGR cleaning, but maybe it's that causing the issues. I also will be buying an obdII reader to check the fault code produced and to clear the lights on the dash, any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

I had exact same issue, until it got that bad the car would hardly move. Had it terra cleaned and the EGR valved cleaned at the same time (£100) the car was like new after that, my MPG went up by loads as well, from just over 30 to about 40.

Let us know how you get on.

Brief update, I got the car on an OBDII reader. It threw up the code p0400 which was described on the reader as an EGR fault. I cleared the fault code and the warning lights on the dash went out. I have since driven car and the lights stayed off. Time to clear the EGR I think!
