Does anyone know how to completely drain the engine coolant system?

Does anyone know how to completely drain the engine coolant system?

I replaced the coolant on mine the other day and I found that even detaching the top and bottom hose from the radiator, and the small hoses through the throttle body, I still only managed to replace about half the fluid.

I would guess that the thermostat needs to come out to do the job properly?

There is a screwed in drain plug on the front of the engine block.
