E11 Gearbox Whine

Well, it seems like as I fix one problem, another shows up :(

My gearbox has started to make a whine in first gear. It's there all the time in first gear, whether accelerating or decelerating or keeping constant speed. It sounds a bit like reverse, that's the best way I can describe it. There are no other problems with the gearbox, goes in and out of gear easily and doesn't pop out of gear. What is likely to be the cause?

I'm going to try changing the gearbox oil possibly at the weekend to see if it helps. The car is a 1999 1.3 Manual Corolla GS with 90000 miles.

It may be the bearing for 1st gear. I would say Thrust Bearing but that would be throughout the range, not exclusively to 1st gear.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have any idea how much that would cost to repair? And is it now a case of change the oil and drive it until it gets really bad, or is it better to sort it now?

When bearings go many people just by another gearbox which will set you back a fair bit, but you can find a reputable gearbox specialist who will replace it for you.

Either way you are looking at many £££ and it would probably be best just to get another gearbox.

sounds like top bearings on input shaft in box are on way out doesnt cost much for bearing its just the time it takes to do them around 6 hour job to remove, strip box replace bearing

Ah. :( Well, I can't really afford it atm, so I'll just change the oil and keep my fingers crossed it doesn't get worse quickly. Thanks for the replies guys.
