2006 Avensis T4 D4D

Hello all, I am new here and new to Toyota. I have an Avensis 2.2 diesel on an 06 plate purchased not long ago and the dealer gave me a 1 month warranty, WOW !!. I knew on the test drive there was a prob selecting 1st gear so mentioned it right away. The salesman told me it would be sorted so they had a new clutch fitted. This unfortunately did not solve the prob and I have very little time left on warranty. I have brought the fact to their attention and also thought that joining this site and asking anyone if they have encountered the same prob would be a good idea. It does have fairly high miles (for age) at 86k but does have a totally complete history from Toyota Main Stealers. Out of 10 attempts at selecting 1st gear about 3 attempts are futile, you have to keep depressing the clutch until it engages 1st, syncro prob is suspect. Any help here would be much appreciated as the g'tee expires on the 29.10.10, apx 1 week from time of posting.

Thanks to anyone for their thoughts.

No real ideas on your continual problem, but my 2005 2.0d4d sometimes won't go into 1st also. I just put it into third, lift my foot off the clutch slightly so it bights then foot back down on clutch and into 1st no probs. Only happens to me once a month or so. I know you have to pay the diagnostic fee with warranties, but if it is gearbox problems the fix will be expensive so surely its worth booking it into a Toyota main dealer just to find out the problem and pay that diagnostic fee. Then you can go to the warranty with proof, after all even if somebody on here tells you what it is the warranty company are not going to take any notice, you will have to have a garage confirm it and you are running out of time!

Regards

David

Good Luck!

Hi mate and welcome to the forum, surely the warranty on this problem can't run out until you have accepted the problem is sorted, any other fault that arises will only be covered under the 1 month warranty.

Does the clutch start to bite as the pedal comes off the floor if so they may not have changed the complete clutch assembly. One word on this though, I have the same car and the clutch (brand new) does bite very low down but goes into gear OK, this seems to be normal on this model so if the pressure plate has not been changed it would make the situation worse. Don't let the garage off the hook and stick to your guns until the fault is cured otherwise you may have a large bill looming.

Regards Pete.

hi

thats a very short warranty you have on the car, would not mind betting they have not even touched the clutch.

did you not road test again before accepting it.does your warranty cover parts and labour.salesmen dont like spendind anything on a car they sell spoils the profit.the will lie through their teeth.thats including toyota main dealers, selling s/hand cars.mine had an non existing 20000 service on it when i purchased it.and service book stamped.but had not been touched.

Thanks for the replys and I think I will book it in to Toyota Main Stealers to see what they come up with. Cheers 8-)

i agree i wouldn't mind betting they have done as little as possible to the clutch

the parts alone inc the duel mass flywheel and other parts will cost near on £500-£700

without labour so expect very limited clutch parts if any to have been fitted

Hi all, just an update. The new clutch was actally fitted but did nothing to cure the prob. Then the gearbox oil was renewed to no avail. It has turned out to be the syncro on 1st gear, this is what I thought all along and I wonder as to why the ''specialists'' (Aintree clutch and gearbox center) did not diagnose this sooner. Cheers all.

That's good news mate, you got to the cause of the problem and providing you got it all done FOC then you actually got a new clutch as a bonus due to their mistake, nice one!:yahoo:.

Best regards Pete.

Thanks Pete, the only other thing I have found, which is more annoying than actually causing any problems is the creaking noise the clutch pedal makes. A couple of mates use this model for taxi's and love them but can you imagine how many times a cab clutch pedal is depressed !!!!. They both have the same prob and mine does too. Ah well, I can live with it as my mileage is not high at approx 7k per annum and maybe I am being a bit picky here !!.

Cheers Pete,

Tony.

Hi again Tony, there are two versions of why the clutch pedal creaks, Toyota dealers change the master cylinder whilst others say lubricating the pedal pivot bushes does the trick so if you are not getting it done FOC try the later.

My master cylinder was done under warranty along with other things.

Regards Pete.

Hi mate. Just thought I'd point out that the Sale of Goods Act says you have a six month warranty anyway, the dealer cannot tell you otherwise. It's different at an auction or if bought privately, but a dealer has to guarantee the product (your car) for six months by law. A fault that develops in that time is deemed to have existed at the time of sale. You have the choice of returning the car and getting a refund, or letting him fix it. The one thing you cannot do is get it mended elsewhere and expect him to settle the bill. If he argues, send a Recorded Delivery letter saying you are taking him to the Small Claims Court. He will roll over before you get there. Legally, there is some debate about enforcing the law on an old banger, but you will have no problem with a 2006 car.

Hi,

the creaking of the clutch pedal is very annoying ive had this on my T2 on at least 3 occasions, you can try what t-spiritpete has mentioned about lubricating the MC but that is only going to be a temp measure until it dries up then starts creaking again and then cause's more damage to other parts ie the master cylinder

ive found that if you change Part-No 314538 (est cost of around £6 from your local Toyota dealer and £10 labour from back street garage or DIY)on a regular basis you could or will more than likely save yourself at least £150 but if the creaking comes back after a short time after changing this small bush Part-No 314538 then you will more than likely have to replace the master cylinder,

clutchpedaldiagram.jpg

why do the dealers change the master cylinder?

i taken a closer look at the master cylinder IMO the knuckle that is screwed onto the rod that goes in and out of the cylinder its a real crap design, the knuckle casing is of metal and inside that there is some kind of nylon bush in the centre of the nylon bush there is a metal tapperd stub after constant pressing/depressing of the clutch pedal the nylon bush also starts to wear and then cockles to one side causing the pedal not to function properly leaving lots of travel in the clutch pedal thus making it difficult to select gears and also causing the metal rod to be pushed in and out at a angle that makes it creak as it rubs on the plastic.

Hello T786, that was a very well put together and comprehensive reply, keep up the good work as i'm sure a lot of members will benefit from that level of detail when trying to solve a problem .

Best regards, Pete.
