Smokey And Wandering Yaris Diesel At 51K Miles

hi there

I bought a 2003 Yaris 1.4 D this evening with 51K miles on the clock.

I was driving it back against a strong headwind. The steering is strange

in that it is very difficult to keep in a straight line! It wants to

veer slightly one way or the other. You correct it one way and it wants

to go the other way. I don't know if it's the wind or something more sinister?

What could it be?

As I was overtaking in the dark at 70 on the motorway, each time I floored

it, I looked in the mirror and saw the vehicle behind shrouded in smoke!

(via their headlights). Do they all smoke like this or have I got one that's

been to the moon and back with a false mileage?

Also I just looked in the engine and there is some sort of oily fluid around

the left hand side of the engine bay (ie offside). It is near a device with

some sort of hand-pump on it. That looks like it has been leaking. The fluid

has gone everywhere and is coating the inside of the front offside wheel arch

as well as in the engine bay.

Cheers

Hey Dude, welcome along.

Just a couple of things ...

a ) my 2004 Yaris was definately susceptible to a bit of crosswind wobbling. I always put it down to it being relatively tall and narrow. That said, it didn't wobble all over the road all of the time, just if you were on a fast road and a big gust came along from the side you could definately feel it. I don't know how windy it is out tonight, just saying what mine was like.

b ) Vehicles behind you shrouded in smoke? Have you ever seen Duel? You do realise it was halloween yesterday?

c ) Although your car may have issues I hope the rug's OK. It really ties the room together, does it not? ;)

Sorry that probably hasn't been very useful but hopefully someone will be along soon to give you some useful advice.

Abide,

Mick

Take it back and ask them to fix it.

Did you test drive it?

I wouldn't worry about the smoke. It is soot that builds up in the exhaust after periods od steady driving. One shot of the accelerator and it blows out. Not ideal but it's not an indication of anything broken or about to break.

I'd be concerned about the oily mess beside what can only be described as the diesel filter. Something is or was not tight and is or was leaking. First check if it is still leaking. Clean it with a rag and run the engine while looking for leaks. Keep your hair out of the belt moving underneath; it'll scalp you!

If the filter is loose, tighten it in an anticlockwise direction as you look down upon it. If it still leaks, bring it back to get sorted.

Good luck.

They are a little likely to wander in heavy winds due to hight over wheelbase, etc, the Verso even more so!

It may be worse if tyres are low/worn, bushes/shocks worn, etc. If you saw a lever, perhaps it is a diesel primer for if you run out of fuel. Not sure if they are fitted to these models as I think its a slightly outmoded concept these days but common on older diesel vehicles. Same with the smoke... newer diesels can be less smokey but will need a good run now and again to clear out the sh-tuff that clogs the engine up. Warm it up and give it some welly on the motorways again for a few drives, as long as all fluids are checked first and you are sure the car is up to it. Perhaps leave it a gear LOWER than usual to increase the revs and get it working.

I once worked in Jersey and a dealer thier was saying about all; the locals travelling only small distances so most cars mileages were very low. He said he would rather have a higher mileage UK car as the engines out there were usually bunged up and needed a good hard drive!

I'm inclined to agree with that dealer. I'd rather have a car with a higher mileage, was serviced regularly and did motorway trips as opposed to a car with low mileage that only did town driving.

It's not too bad for petrol, but for diesels, they deffo need to be thrashed now and then to blow the crap out if they never see a motorway.

If the car still shifts when you floor it, don't worry about the cloud so much :P

If it smokes during normal driving tho', this is often a sign of turbo failure! Since you're only getting it on hard acceleration however I think you're okay :)

Failing turbos usually have the big plume of smoke as you stop, after a bit of a drive, say at lights, etc. Cloud of stink billows out as you draw to a halt.
