What Size Are The Door Speakers On A 2000 3Dr?

I fitted a set of Kenwood 6x9's and a Kenwood amp to my Corolla over the week end very happy with the sound but have one problem. even with the amp turned well down it sounds like the sound is entirely coming from the back of the car. I am now looking to get new front door Speakers and wire them to a smaller amp but need to know what size to get first.

if they are the same as mine then you have 6.5" mids in each of the front doors and a tweeter just under each a-pillar. rear doors have 5.25", naturally both doors need a set of adapters to fix up the factory hole pattern to one to suit the Speakers you buy.

personally i'm a purist when it comes to sound i have no rear Speakers in my car i just have the mids in the doors, tweeters in the factory locations and looking at getting either some 3" coaxials up on the dash or some staging tweeters on the dash. properly amplified and installed (mdf baffles, sound proofing etc) front Speakers are way better than any amount of 6x9 action. the sound should always be coming from in front of you like it does at a live event.

anyway as usual i've started ranting so i'll shut up now. anymore help needed on the audio front give us a shout.

last thing - if i were in your shoes i'd sell the 6x9s and the amp running them and then do some hardcore research and buy a set of 6.5" components for the front and an appropriate amp to run them off. thats my opinion.

Hey CorollaD4D,

Can I ask you to carry on ranting a bit longer ...

My bog standard CC needs improving and it seems component front Speakers are preferable but I do not have any tweeters factory fitted - assume they would go in the plastic bezel covering the wing mirror bolts.

It would seem sensible to buy a matched pair of 6.5" with separate tweeters as several companies do, eg online Boss.

However the few Speakers I have been able to see and hear leave me none the wiser, partly due to the limited selction and also the hopeless demo rigs - poor quality souces, half the selector switches faulty etc etc.

I just want a better sound without massive expense or replacing the head unit at the momemt.

Are there any speaker kits you think would fit the bill - I'm not after the boom boom stuff- just better quality sound for general pop /listening

cheers.

there is one problem with what you ask of me - to make a speaker better it must be made more specialised at reproducing a certain set of frequencies and be made to produce those frequencies without colouring the music. in real terms this means any set of Speakers i recommend to you, the mids with play mid frequencies and the tweeters will play the highs you WILL lose out on the bottom end, normally you'd replace this with either mid-bass or a small subwoofer in the boot however this adds to the cost and complexity of your setup.

the first and foremost thing i would do is to change the headunit to either alpine or pioneer, and no other make. its probably the best option since a pioneer or alpine unit will power your speakers to something like 18w rms which is more power than the factory headunit puts into them and will allow you to maximise the factory speakers.

now if i recommend you some upgrade components which you hooked up to either alpine or pioneer headunit the difference would be huge, the music will have more definition, clarity and most importantly more volume without distortion. the only issue is the loss of the bass frequencies which need to be replaced somehow.

if you wanted a basic setup then i'd say £150 for headunit, around 60-80 for some component speakers and then if you got yourself a small active sub (one where the amplifier for the sub is built into the box) that'd cost around £100 and then i would pay around 70-90 worth of labour to fit all the equipment and have the guy tune the sound properly, set the system up etc. so at the very least there's roughly 400 of cost there, if you stretch your budget to closer to 500 you'll have an audio system which is much more than adequate for the normal listener who listens to the radio on the way to work, some cds etc etc.

having said all that i re-read your original post and realised i had answered a different question to the one you asked. if you don't have factory tweeter locations then the easiest solution is to fit coaxial speakers in the doors, something like these pioneer ones at £60 or these jl audio ones at £80.

if you remove the cap over the wing mirror nut thingy and feel confident to throw some wiring up there for a tweeter then id recommend these alpine components.

personally if i was in your shoes i'd just get some speaker adapters and choose the pioneer coaxials at 60quid and put them in. you will lose out on bottom end bass frequencies but your music will be lifted with more clarity due to the inbuilt tweeter on the coaxial which if your car currently does not have any form of tweeter you'll hear the difference straight away.

should i join in to?

im all down for quality but even a very small install works out expensive.

my new install is extremely small and budgeted,

200 For Subwoofer

310 For Amplifier

90 For Components

50 For Sound Deadening

20 For Speaker Cabling

60 For Power Cablinf

180 For HeadUnit

Im running a 8inch subwoofer, Installs are not cheap and both the guys above know alot about installs.

Thanks for the help! plenty to learn by the sounds of it. Plan is to get proper set of components and properly fitted now, 6x9s went in because I got it all cheap. All for 90 euro out of a mates crashed car. His loss, my gain!

I won't rant just yet, i think you've covered the main points of what he needs to do, a quality set of comps at the front, powered by an amp, doors should be soundproofed to reduce vibration/external noise and improve the speaker's performance and definition quality.

It's the little things, that will improve the bigger picture in the end, don't expect to do it all at once, take your time, and change as and when you can, took me years to get what i've got to now, and costed even more

Farhan are you using dynamat xtreme "door kit" that is enough to do 2 front doors adequate for most people including myself.

When you say "adequate", i lost a whole roll of it on the doors some how, even more in the boot, and thats before i decided to cover it all in dynaspray stuff

If i rememeber rightly, there should be about 8 rolls of the stuff in my car somewhere, and quite a few cans of spray too, i'm sure you can work out the sum in how much that's cost me

you can easily get carried away with dynamat but its good stuff so it doesnt really hurt other than your wallet lol

my car is going later today for some new audio which have had boxes made etc and been sat around waiting for time when i can drop the car off for them to be installed so theyve got afternoon of today along with all day saturday to make a good job of it hopefully should be nice i'll chuck some pics up sunday if i get chance.

the only thing which is annoying is that little black thing that pops up when you open the sunroof, even with sunroof closed and blind across it still rattles like a little mother flipper ive got that getting covered in dynamat too :D

It should be the same as the 5dr version, if so, look at my pics, should give you some idea.

I took the pics of the passenger side door, but the driver side door should be the same

in the 5dr rear Speakers are accessed by removal of the rear door card. in 3dr i assume there will be some similar arrangement to remove the trim covering the speaker i guess.

Interesting what is the process to remove the rear covers on a 3 door had a look around but dont want to break anythingbut thinking i might just throw in some coaxials in the rear incase

I have had the trim panels off, its not an easy task and not for the faint hearted a lot of pulling panels off, if memory serves me right 90% of the panels are held in by clips.

these days apart from engine and gearbox everything is held together by those small plastic clips, i sometimes wonder how my cars stays in one piece!
